Barber Motorsports Park by the Numbers: IndyCar in 2027
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Track Preview - the numbers, the records, and the data behind every race. The 2026 season is over, so this week is a between-races feature on the track that hosts race four of 2027.
The Short Version
IndyCar does not race again until March 7, 2027, so this is a between-races data feature rather than a preview. The subject is Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, which holds race four of the 2027 NTT INDYCAR SERIES calendar on Sunday, April 4. It is one of the prettiest places the series goes and one of the hardest to pass at, and the record book there is currently a two-man tie that Alex Palou can break with one more win.
The Number That Matters
3 wins each - Josef Newgarden and Alex Palou
Nobody has ever won four IndyCar races at Barber, and Palou has taken the last two in a row.
The Track: 2.3 Miles, 17 Turns, and 80 Feet of Elevation
Barber opened in 2003 as part of an 880-acre park built around George Barber's motorcycle collection. The circuit was designed by Alan Wilson, and INDYCAR lists it as a 2.3-mile permanent road course with 17 flowing turns and 80 feet of elevation change. The IndyCar race runs 90 laps, which comes out to roughly 207 miles.
The number that explains how Barber races is the width of the asphalt: 45 feet. That is narrow for a modern road course, and combined with corners that flow into each other rather than ending in heavy braking zones, it means there are very few places where a driver can simply drive up the inside of somebody. INDYCAR's own description of the circuit calls patience essential when setting up an overtake, which is a polite way of saying that if you qualify badly here, you are in trouble.
That is also why the push-to-pass numbers matter more here than at a track with a long straight. Drivers get 200 seconds of push-to-pass for the race with a 20-second cap on any single activation, and on a road course they can stack that on top of the hybrid energy recovery boost. Firestone brings six sets of primary tires and four sets of the softer alternates. Spending the soft rubber and the electric boost in the right 20-second windows is most of the strategy at a place where track position is this hard to take by force.
The outright record still belongs to Pato O'Ward, who put an Arrow McLaren Chevrolet around Barber in 1:05.5019 at 126.409 mph in qualifying in 2021. He owns the race lap record from that same weekend at 1:06.8182. Five seasons later, nobody has beaten either one.
The Record Book: Newgarden and Palou, Tied at Three
IndyCar has raced at Barber every year since 2010 apart from 2020, when the pandemic wiped the date off the calendar. That makes 16 runnings. Team Penske has won eight of them, which is half of every Barber race ever held, and the individual lead is a tie between Josef Newgarden (2015, 2017, 2018) and Alex Palou (2021, 2025, 2026).
Palou's three wins here tell two completely different stories. The first one, in 2021, was the season opener and the first IndyCar win of his career, and he took it by four tenths of a second from Will Power after starting third. The last two were nothing like that.
| Year | Start | Finish | Laps Led | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 3 | 1 | 56 of 90 | 0.4016 sec |
| 2025 | 1 | 1 | 81 of 90 | 16.0035 sec |
| 2026 | 1 | 1 | 79 of 90 | 13.2775 sec |
Pole, lead almost every lap, win by double digits. He has done that twice in a row now. The 2026 edition was also the fastest Barber race ever run, at an average of 117.210 mph, with Christian Lundgaard second and Graham Rahal third for his first podium since 2023.
Where Barber Sits on the 2027 Calendar
INDYCAR released Phase One of the 2027 schedule in August, and it is another fast start to the year. St. Petersburg opens on March 7, Phoenix Raceway follows on March 13, and the Streets of Arlington run on March 21. Then comes a two-week break before Barber on April 4, Long Beach on April 18, the Indianapolis road course on May 15, the 111th Indianapolis 500 on May 30, and Detroit on June 6.
For INDYCAR, these are the dates for 2027 that have been announced or correspond with IMSA dates announced:
— Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) August 5, 2026
March 7-St Pete
March 14-Phoenix
March 21-Arlington
April 18-Long Beach
May 30-Indy 500
June 6-Detroit
That slot matters. Barber is the first conventional permanent road course of the year, coming after a street circuit, an oval and another street circuit. It is the first honest read anyone gets on which cars actually have downforce and mechanical grip rather than just straight-line punch and bravery between concrete walls.
Who to Watch When IndyCar Comes Back
Alex Palou closed 2026 with his fifth championship in six years, 631 points, six wins, eight poles and twelve top-five finishes, and he clinched it with a race to spare. He also won the last two Barber races from pole. There is no data-based argument for anybody else being the favorite there.
Christian Lundgaard finished second at Barber in both 2025 and 2026, behind Palou each time. He ended 2026 third in the standings on 535 points with two wins, the Indianapolis road course in May and Road America in June. He is the closest thing Barber has to a driver who is overdue.
Kyle Kirkwood was the 2026 runner-up on 545 points. Both of his wins came on street circuits, Arlington in March and Washington, D.C. in August, and he was third at Mid-Ohio. Barber is the kind of flowing permanent road course that would round out his resume.
Josef Newgarden is the other half of the three-win tie, and Team Penske has won half the races ever held at the track. Write him off at your own risk.
The Bottom Line
Barber is 45 feet wide, 17 corners long and almost impossible to pass on, which is exactly why qualifying there tells you who wins. Palou has started on pole and won the last two, the record books show nobody has ever won four, and the man he is tied with is still on the grid. April 4 is a long way off, but that is the stat to file away.
