The Short Version

The four tires bolted to a Cup car this Sunday at New Hampshire are not the same tire. The two on the left side are softer and physically smaller than the two on the right. Goodyear builds them that way on purpose, because on an oval a driver only ever turns left, and that means the right-side tires carry nearly all of the load. Get the rubber wrong for a track and the race turns into a tire-saving contest by lap 30.

Compound and Construction: Two Different Knobs

Every racing tire is really two decisions stacked on top of each other, and knowing the difference makes every tire story you hear all season click into place.

Compound is the chemistry. It is the rubber recipe: carbon black, resins, oils and accelerators blended into a tread that has to keep working at around 320 degrees. Softer compound means more grip and faster wear. Harder compound means less grip and longer life. Think of the sole of a shoe. A soft gum sole sticks to a gym floor beautifully and is worn smooth by spring. A hard work-boot sole lasts for years and slides on that same floor.

Construction is the skeleton. Nylon plies carry the load, fiberglass or aramid belts set the shape of the patch of rubber actually touching the track, and the bead and apex keep the tire steady when the car leans on it in a corner. Compound is the paint. Construction is the framing.

Goodyear can change one without touching the other, and it does that constantly. That is why race previews say "new left-side tire" or "new right-side tire" instead of just "new tire." At Iowa earlier this month Goodyear debuted a fresh left-side with updated construction and compound while leaving the right side exactly as it had been the year before. At Michigan in June and Indianapolis in July, it did the opposite and changed only the right.

Why the Right Side Does All the Work

On an oval, the driver turns left. Every lap, every corner, for hours. When a 3,200-pound car changes direction, and that is before you add a driver and a full load of fuel, its weight piles onto the outside of the turn. It is the same shove you feel against the door when somebody takes a highway ramp too fast. In a left-hand corner, the outside is the right side of the car.

So the right-front and right-rear spend the whole race carrying more weight, making more heat, and taking more abuse. The lefts ride relatively light and stay cooler. Goodyear builds for that split. The right-side tire gets the tougher construction and the more durable compound because it has to survive. The left-side tire is smaller and softer because it has to make grip while running cooler and carrying less. Swap them and both fail: soft left rubber on the right would come apart, and hard right rubber on the left would never heat up enough to stick.

The Sizes Are Different Too

Look at the actual numbers for this weekend at New Hampshire. The Cup left-side tire measures 2,249 mm around, which is 88.5 inches. The right-side measures 2,279 mm, or 89.7 inches. That 1.2-inch gap is called stagger, and it is deliberate. A bigger tire covers more ground per revolution, so a car with bigger rights than lefts naturally wants to roll to the left, the same way a paper cup rolls in a circle instead of a straight line. Stagger is free turning help.

Air pressure splits the same way. Goodyear's minimum recommendation at New Hampshire is 14 psi in each left-side tire against 30 psi in the right front and 26 in the right rear. The rights run stiffer because they are the ones holding the car up through the corner.

The Four Families of Tire

Goodyear builds four kinds of dry slick radial for Cup, and the track decides which one shows up in the hauler.

Speedway tires go to Daytona and Talladega. They are the hardest rubber there is, because wide-open throttle for hours makes heat resistance and stability matter more than cornering grip. Intermediate tires go to Charlotte, Las Vegas and Kansas, a medium-to-hard build aimed at predictable wear over long green-flag runs. Road course tires get reinforced construction to survive curb strikes and heavy braking at places like Watkins Glen. And short track tires, the softest thing Goodyear makes, go to Bristol, Martinsville and New Hampshire, built for maximum grip and heavy falloff on purpose so tire management becomes strategy. At the 2025 Bristol night race, some sets were used up in about 25 laps.

New Hampshire gets the short-track family. Goodyear is bringing the same combination Cup already ran this year at Martinsville, North Wilkesboro, Richmond and Bowman Gray: code D-5262 on the left, D-5256 on the right. Teams get 10 dry sets for the weekend plus four wet-weather sets.

What You Will See on Track Sunday

Once you know the rubber is split left and right, the broadcast starts making more sense. When a spotter says the car is "free" late in a run, the right-rear is usually the tire giving up first, because it has been the most punished corner of the car all day. When a crew chief takes two tires instead of four, he is almost always taking the two rights, since those are the ones that are actually worn out.

You will also see the yellow lettering on the sidewalls. That marks a standard prime tire. On the weekends NASCAR brings the softer option tire, introduced in 2024, that lettering is red instead, and every set a team burns early is a set it does not have at the end.

The Bottom Line

A Cup car does not run four tires. It runs two pairs of very different tires, sized and mixed for a corner that only ever goes one direction, and Goodyear rewrites that recipe for every track on the schedule. Next time a driver says the tire "fell off," you will know exactly which two he means.
