Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Fan Guide: Cooler Policy, Bag Policy and What to Bring (2026)

The Mid-Ohio cooler policy is one of the friendliest in American racing. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course tells fans straight out that you can bring coolers and food to the track, and it does not publish a cooler size limit or a clear-bag rule the way most stadium-style venues do. That makes a day at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio cheaper and easier than a lot of race weekends, as long as you know the handful of rules the track does enforce.

Mid-Ohio Cooler Policy

Mid-Ohio's official fan guide answers the picnic question directly. Yes, you can bring coolers and food to the track. The track recommends bringing plastic and aluminum, and it lists plastic, aluminum and tin containers as acceptable.

What Mid-Ohio does not do is publish a maximum cooler size. There is no 14-inch rule, no soft-sided-only rule, and no one-cooler-per-person rule in the official guide. A full-size wheeled cooler with a weekend of food and drinks is normal here in a way it is not at most tracks.

The one hard limit is glass. Glass bottles are not allowed in the pit or paddock areas, so pack cans or plastic if you plan to walk the paddock. Grilling is permitted only in the camping and infield areas, and the track requires all grill fires be extinguished immediately afterward, then drowned or smothered.

Mid-Ohio Bag Policy

Mid-Ohio does not publish a bag size limit or a clear-bag requirement. Backpacks are allowed, and that is what most fans carry here because the facility is large and hilly and you will walk a lot of it.

The rule that does apply is inspection. In the interest of safety, Mid-Ohio reserves the right to inspect all personal property, including vehicles, campers, backpacks and coolers. Plan on your bag being opened at the gate. Also keep your ticket on you: tickets are scanned on entry, and if you leave and come back the same day your ticket must be scanned on exit too. Skip that and you are required to buy a new ticket, with no exceptions.

Prohibited Items at Mid-Ohio

Mid-Ohio's rules and facility policies page is short, but these are firm:

• Firearms. No firearms are permitted anywhere on Mid-Ohio property. The track states it is not CCW compliant.
• Drones. Not allowed anywhere on the facility without prior authorization.
• Glass bottles in the pit or paddock areas.
• Scaffolding. Prohibited. Any viewing platform must be permanently mounted on a truck bed, no more than six feet above the ground, and incapable of being elevated.
• Stadium seats in the grandstands. Those clip-on seat backs are not permitted in the grandstand seating.
• Tents tied to spectator fences, and no tents, canopies or dining flies erected on the amphitheater viewing mounds. Popup canopies are allowed on the top row only, as long as they do not block anyone's view.
• Climbing or sitting in trees, and using trash barrels as viewing platforms. Sitting or standing on gates is also not allowed.
• Saving space overnight. Roping off or tarping spectator, pedestrian and mound areas overnight is not permitted without authorization, and anything left out gets collected by staff and held at Security.
• Crossing the fences. Under no circumstances may spectators cross fences or go on course.

What You Can Bring Into Mid-Ohio

The permitted list is long, which is the whole appeal of this place:

• Coolers, outside food and non-glass drinks.
• Folding chairs for the grass viewing mounds. Mid-Ohio is a mound-and-hillside track, and most general admission fans watch from a chair on a hill.
• Popup canopies, on the top row of a mound only, if they do not block views.
• Bicycles, which are permitted anywhere on Mid-Ohio property except the paddock and pit areas.
• Personal golf carts and off-road vehicles such as ATVs, UTVs and side-by-sides, if they display the proper pass purchased from Mid-Ohio for $100 and follow the track's golf cart guidelines.
• Pets, on a leash no longer than six feet. Pets are not permitted in any buildings, concession areas, grandstands or viewing mounds, hospitality locations, paddock or garage areas, false grid, or pit lane.
• A radio. Mid-Ohio's public address audio is carried on 90.3 FM during spectator events.

Grandstands, Mounds and the Track Layout

Mid-Ohio is a permanent road course in Lexington, Ohio, with two primary configurations: a 2.4-mile, 15-turn layout and a 2.258-mile, 13-turn layout. IndyCar runs the 13-turn, 2.258-mile version for the Honda Indy 200.

A grandstand ticket includes general admission plus a reserved seat with a view from the Keyhole to the Esses, and only a limited number are sold for each event. Children 12 and under are admitted free onto the grounds with a ticketed adult, but they need their own grandstand ticket to sit in the grandstand. Remember that stadium seats are not allowed in the grandstands, so bring a cushion instead of a seat back.

Everywhere else, you are on grass. The viewing mounds around the Keyhole, the Esses and the Carousel are the classic Mid-Ohio experience, and a general admission ticket gets you walking access to almost the entire property.

Getting There and Race-Day Tips

The address is 7721 Steam Corners Road, also called County Road 37, Lexington, Ohio 44904, just off Interstate 71 between Columbus and Cleveland. Spectator gates open at 7:00 a.m. each morning, and non-camping spectators need to be off the property by 7:00 p.m. or within an hour of the last scheduled session.

Parking is free in the general lot for standard passenger vehicles. Oversized vehicles may be denied or charged and are not allowed in the infield. A limited number of infield parking passes are sold for the Honda Indy 200 and require a spectator ticket, though motorcycles and vehicles with a state accessible placard do not need one. Gate 1 off Steam Corners Road is the main gate and the place to buy tickets. Gate 3 is for Will Call, credentials and workers, with no ticket sales except between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The speed limit is 20 mph everywhere on property.

Accessible parking is in the infield and along the Boulevard near the drive-over bridge, and wheelchair accessible seating is at the Infield Souvenir and Food Stand patio. Security and lost and found are near Gate 3 at (419) 884-4000 extension 3013, and the Dan McNutt Medical Facility sits just east of the drive-over bridge. Shuttles run during most events.

Fan Tips

Bring a chair, not a stadium seat. Most of your day is spent on the mounds, and a real folding chair beats a bleacher cushion on grass.

Pack the cooler heavy. With no size cap, this is one of the few tracks where a big wheeled cooler is worth hauling in. Ice is sold at most concession stands and at the Commissary.

Wear real shoes. Mid-Ohio's own guide describes a 380-acre property of rolling Ohio farmland, and the walk to the far side of the circuit is a long one. Golf cart rentals are available on site.

Plan for weather. Events typically continue in the rain, and the track says a full cancellation is very rare. Bring a poncho and sunscreen, because the mounds have almost no shade.
