The bag policy at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

Start here, because this is the rule that catches out American fans used to a stadium clear-bag sign. Mexico City does not ask for clear bags. It caps the dimensions instead, and the numbers are small.

Small handbags, with or without straps, may measure no more than 11 x 16 cm. Waist bags and fanny packs get the same 11 x 16 cm limit. Bags and backpacks may measure no more than 10 x 15 x 30 cm, and the circuit says it prefers transparent plastic, vinyl or PVC even though clear is not required. Medium transparent storage bags, the zip-lock kind, are specifically allowed on top of that.

Ten by fifteen by thirty centimetres is roughly the size of a shoebox stood on end. That is not a daypack. Camping backpacks are banned by name, and so are trolleys, so there is no version of this where you roll a bag over from the Metro and check it somewhere. Bag checks run at the entrances, and the circuit is blunt about what happens next: a prohibited item gets confiscated and disposed of, and in extreme cases you can be refused entry.

Coolers, outside food and drink

There is no cooler size to memorize at the Mexico City Grand Prix, because coolers are prohibited. So is external food and drink, full stop. Glass bottles and cans are banned separately, and cooking and grilling are not allowed anywhere on the circuit.

Food and drink inside runs on a cashless system. The Citibanamex cashless card is what the concession stands take, and you load it with either a bank card or cash before you buy. Sort that out early on Friday or Saturday rather than in a Sunday queue. The one thing you can carry in for a child is baby food, which is on the permitted list.

Prohibited items at the Mexico City Grand Prix

Here is the official banned list, grouped the way it is easiest to pack against.

Food and containers: coolers, external food or drink, glass bottles or cans.

Comfort gear: chairs, backrests for seat cushions, blankets, camping backpacks, tents and trolleys, stuffed animals.

Camera and tech: drones, professional video or audio recording equipment, tripods, monopods, reflective displays and lighting, GoPro poles and selfie sticks.

Safety and security: firearms, sharp objects, belts with studs or large buckles, chains or wallets with chains, pointed umbrellas, pole flags, bicycles, skateboards or longboards, balls or frisbees, musical instruments, pets and unauthorised substances.

Drones deserve their own line. The circuit warns that flying one can be treated as a criminal offence by local police, not just a confiscation. Leave it at the hotel.

What you can bring

The permitted list is longer than most first-timers expect, and it is worth reading before you leave anything useful in the hotel room.

You can bring hats and caps, sunglasses, jackets, raincoats and rain boots, beach towels, earplugs, prescription medication, external phone batteries, binoculars without lasers, motorcycle helmets, and small umbrella strollers. Sunscreen and hand sanitiser are allowed in containers up to 100 ml each. Event flags or banners are welcome up to one metre long, with PVC poles only, and small umbrellas are fine as long as they do not have a pointed tip.

Cameras are more relaxed here than at a lot of circuits. Non-professional video cameras for personal use are permitted, GoPro cameras are allowed, and if you bring an SLR the limits are a maximum 300 mm lens and no more than two lenses. It is the poles, tripods and professional rigs that get stopped, not the camera itself.

One rule that reads two ways: chairs appear on the prohibited list, but the circuit's own FAQ says camping chairs are allowed at the natural grandstand, meaning the grass general-admission banking rather than the built stands. If your ticket is for that area and you want a chair, confirm it with the circuit before you travel rather than gambling at the gate.

Altitude, weather and how to pack for both

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez sits about 2,240 metres above sea level, roughly 7,350 feet, which makes it by a wide margin the highest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar. The thin air is why the cars run maximum downforce wings and still slide, and it is why you will be more out of breath walking to your seat than you expect. Take the walk slowly and drink more water than feels necessary.

Late October and early November in Mexico City means mild days and cold evenings. The circuit puts daytime averages around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius and evenings around 10 to 12, and it recommends layers or a light jacket. Showers can still turn up, which is why a raincoat or a small umbrella without a pointed tip belongs in the bag. Sun at that altitude is stronger than the temperature suggests, so the 100 ml sunscreen allowance and a cap are both worth using.

Earplugs are on the permitted list and the circuit specifically recommends ear protection for children near the track. A 2026 Formula 1 car is loud, and the Foro Sol stadium section bounces the sound back at you.

Getting in, and the re-entry rule that catches people out

Read this one twice. Re-entry is strictly forbidden. Once your ticket is scanned it cannot be used again that day, so if you walk out for lunch or back to the car for a jacket, you are done. Pack for the whole day the first time.

Tickets are digital SafeTix with rotating barcodes, so you need the live barcode in your account or mobile wallet, not a screenshot. Mobile networks get overloaded on race day, so the circuit advises printing a backup and agreeing on a meeting spot with your group before you lose signal. Standard tickets do not include parking, and the circuit points fans at the Metro and rideshare instead.

Gate opening times move year to year and had not been published for 2026 at the time of writing, so check the official schedule in the week of the race rather than working off an old one.

The circuit itself

The track is 4.304 km, 71 laps, and 305.354 km of race distance. It first hosted a Grand Prix in 1963, and Valtteri Bottas holds the lap record at 1:18.741 from 2018. The signature feature is the Foro Sol section, where the layout cuts through an old baseball stadium and puts thousands of fans right on top of the cars. If you are picking a seat and you want atmosphere over top speed, that is the one.
