F1 Active Aero Explained: What Replaced DRS in 2026

The Short Version

DRS is gone. After 15 seasons, F1 retired the flap-that-opens-when-you-are-close rule and replaced it with active aero, where the front and rear wings both change shape on every straight, for every car, every lap. Passing help now comes from the battery instead of the bodywork, through a mode the FIA simply calls Overtake. Here is what all of that actually means when you are watching Sunday.

First, What DRS Actually Did

The Drag Reduction System arrived in 2011 for one reason: passing had gotten too hard. The fix was a small movable flap in the middle of the rear wing. When the flap opened, the wing had less surface pushing against the air, so the car punched a smaller hole down the straight and gained speed.

You could not use it whenever you wanted. Timing loops buried in the track measured the gap between two cars at a spot called the detection point. If the car behind was inside one second, a light came up on its steering wheel and the driver pressed a button to open the flap in the zone that followed. A second and a half back, you got nothing.

Why F1 Killed DRS and Switched to Active Aero

The 2026 rulebook did not drop DRS because fans complained about it. It dropped DRS because the new cars made it pointless.

To make the cars lighter and more raceable, the FIA cut downforce by roughly 30 percent and drag by roughly 55 percent. Drag is the air resistance a car hauls along with it. If you have already removed more than half of it, opening one little flap does not buy you much.

So instead of one flap that opens for one lucky car, F1 gave every car wings that reshape themselves all lap long.

Meet Straight Mode and Corner Mode

Active aero has two settings, and the names tell you exactly what they do.

Corner mode is the default. The front and rear wing flaps sit in their normal, steeply angled position, biting into the air and pushing the car down onto the track. That is the grip you want for a corner.

Straight mode is the low-drag setting. In pre-approved zones, the flaps on both the front and rear wings flatten out. Less angle means less air resistance, which means more speed and less fuel and battery burned getting there. The front wing joining in is the important upgrade over DRS: flattening only the rear used to unbalance the car, and moving both ends together keeps it stable.

If those two names sound new, they are. The FIA originally called them X-mode and Z-mode, then ran the terminology past fan focus groups and renamed everything on 17 December 2025. Manual Override Mode became Overtake, and the battery terms became Boost and Recharge. Same hardware, plainer English.

So How Do You Pass Now? The Overtake Button

Here is the part that trips people up. Active aero is not the passing aid. Everybody gets it, so it helps nobody in particular. The passing aid in 2026 is electrical.

The 2026 MGU-K, the motor-generator bolted to the engine, produces 350 kW, up from 120 kW on the old cars. Meanwhile the combustion side dropped from around 550 to 560 kW down to 400 kW. That is roughly a 50-50 split between petrol and electricity, and it means how you spend the battery is now most of the race.

Overtake works on the same one-second trigger DRS used. Get within a second of the car ahead at the detection point and, for the whole of the next lap, you unlock an extra 0.5 megajoules of energy plus a more generous deployment profile. In practice the chasing car holds the full 350 kW all the way to 337 km/h, while the leading car's deployment starts tapering off after 290 km/h. That difference is the run you now need to complete a pass.

The 2026 rules cut drag by more than half. That single number is why a movable rear flap stopped being worth the trouble.

The Rules Behind the Zones

The FIA decides where straight mode is allowed at each track using three tests. A zone has to last more than three seconds, so drivers are not flicking modes for a scrap of lap time. It has to stay safe in every condition, from a light qualifying car on fresh tyres to a heavy one on worn rubber. And it has to keep speed into the next corner sensible, which is why some zones this season have been shortened or thrown out.

You get more of these than you used to get DRS zones. Australia opened the season with five. There is also a partial mode for damp conditions, where the front wing flattens but the rear wing stays in corner mode, so the car keeps rear grip without ruining its balance.

And then there is Monaco, where the FIA switched active aero off entirely and locked the cars in corner mode all weekend. Too many corners, not enough straight.

One more wrinkle worth knowing: back in February, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said the paddock had agreed not to use straight mode between the grid and the first corner. Twenty cars all flattening their wings into Turn 1 was a bad idea nobody wanted to test.

What You Will See at Monza This Sunday

The Italian Grand Prix runs Sunday, 6 September, with lights out at 9:00 AM ET. Monza is the fastest circuit on the calendar and the one place where low drag has always been king, so watch the wings.

Teams used to bring a special skinny-wing Monza package and then suffer in the corners all weekend. With straight mode doing the drag cutting for them, that compromise should be softer in 2026. The trade is energy: Monza is long full-throttle runs and very little braking, which means very little chance to recharge. Expect some cars to run out of push before the line.

The championship picture going in: Kimi Antonelli leads on 242 points with six wins, ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton on 183 each, then Lando Norris on 159 after his win at Zandvoort, with Charles Leclerc on 155.

The Bottom Line

DRS asked one question: are you within a second? Active aero asks nothing, because everyone gets it. The real fight in 2026 is over electricity, and the driver who manages the battery best is the one who arrives at the corner with something left.
