George Russell: 7 F1 Wins and a Real Shot at the 2026 Title
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing Formula 1 Driver Spotlight, where we pull one driver into the garage, look at the career, and tell you what makes them tick. This week: the number 63.
The Short Version
George Russell is the lead driver at Mercedes and one of the best qualifiers in Formula 1. He has 7 wins, 12 pole positions and 29 podiums from 163 starts, and he has never finished a season higher than fourth in the championship. That is the whole story of his career in one line: fast enough to win anywhere, still waiting on the year where it all lines up. In 2026 he is third in the standings with 12 races left, and the guy beating him is his own teammate.
From King's Lynn to a Mercedes Seat
Russell was born on February 15, 1998, in King's Lynn, a market town in Norfolk on the east coast of England. His parents are Steve and Alison, and he is the youngest of three. He started karting at seven, and by 2012 he had won the FIA European karting title in the KF3 class.
The junior record is about as clean as it gets. He won the BRDC Formula 4 championship in 2014 with five wins and took the Autosport BRDC Award as the youngest winner in its history. He joined the Mercedes junior programme in late 2016 after pitching himself to team boss Toto Wolff, and then he won the GP3 title as a rookie in 2017 and the Formula 2 title as a rookie in 2018, beating Lando Norris and Alex Albon along the way.
Then came three years at Williams, and that is the part that made his name. The car was slow. Russell was not. He out-qualified teammate Robert Kubica 21 times out of 21 in 2019, and the paddock started calling him Mr Saturday. He picked the number 63 because it was his brother Benjy's karting number.
The Moments That Built Him
The first one came before he ever drove a competitive car. At the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton tested positive for COVID and Mercedes put Russell in the seat. He qualified second, led most of the race, and then lost it to a pit stop mix-up where the crew fitted Valtteri Bottas's tyres, followed by a late puncture. He finished ninth. Everyone in the sport saw what they needed to see.
The first podium came at Spa in 2021 in a Williams, in a rain-soaked race that never really got going. The first win came at São Paulo in 2022, his first season at Mercedes, and he won the sprint that weekend too.
The strangest one came at Spa again in 2024. Russell crossed the line first on a one-stop gamble, then got disqualified because his car was 1.5kg underweight. It was the first F1 race winner thrown out of a result since 1994.

The 2026 Title Fight
This season has been the cruelest one yet. Russell took pole and won the opener in Melbourne, then watched his rookie-turned-title-rival teammate Kimi Antonelli reel off win after win. In Canada he started on pole, led, and stopped on track on lap 30 with a battery failure. At Spa he got turned into the gravel on the opening lap after contact with Lewis Hamilton, who picked up a five-second penalty for it.
In between, he answered. He took pole and beat Max Verstappen straight up at the Red Bull Ring in June for his second win of the year. After 11 rounds he sits third with 160 points, 9 behind Hamilton and 59 behind Antonelli. There are 12 races left, starting at Zandvoort on August 23. He also has two sprint wins this year, from China and Canada.
His seat is not the question. Mercedes announced a contract extension in October 2025 that keeps him and Antonelli together, with an option to run through 2027. The question is whether he can convert the speed into a championship before the window closes.
Off the Track
Russell has been a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association since 2021, which means he spends real time on safety and driver issues that never show up on a broadcast. He is also one of the more measured talkers in the paddock, which is part of why the other drivers put him in that job.
He has been with Carmen Montero Mundt since 2020, after a mutual friend set them up. The two announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post on August 9, 2026, during the summer break. It has been a good few weeks for him away from the car, even if the season has not always cooperated.
The Bottom Line
George Russell has done everything a driver is supposed to do on the way up. He won titles in the junior categories, he dragged a bad Williams into places it had no business being, and he has beaten world champions in equal cars. What he does not have yet is the trophy that counts. With 12 races left in 2026 and a Mercedes that wins races, this is the closest he has come.
