Christopher Bell stats tell the story of a driver who wins everywhere and rarely gets talked about first. He has 244 Cup Series starts, 14 Cup wins, 15 poles and 121 top 10s, plus a Truck Series championship and 41 wins across NASCAR's three national series. In 2026 he finished second seven times before he finally won the Southern 500 at Darlington on September 6, and he sits third in the Chase heading to Bristol. From Oklahoma dirt to the number 20
Christopher David Bell was born December 16, 1994, in Norman, Oklahoma. He did not come up through a famous racing family or a factory development pipeline. He came up on dirt, in midgets, in the part of the sport where you either get fast quickly or you go home.
He got fast quickly. Bell won the USAC National Midget Series championship in 2013 at 18 years old. He won the Turkey Night Grand Prix in 2014, then again in 2017 and 2018. Most famously, he won the Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa three years in a row, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, which made him only the third three-time winner in the history of that race. Ask a dirt fan about Bell and the Chili Bowl run is the first thing they bring up.
The stock car climb was just as quick. He won the Mudsummer Classic on the dirt at Eldora in 2015, his first season of Truck Series racing, then won the Truck Series championship in 2017. He moved to the Xfinity Series and piled up 19 wins in 82 career starts. He arrived in the Cup Series full time in 2020, moved to Joe Gibbs Racing and the number 20 in 2021, and won his first Cup race that February on the Daytona road course.

The season of seconds, and the night it ended
The 2026 season is the strangest of Bell's career. Week after week he was fast, and week after week he came up one spot short. Phoenix. Charlotte. Nashville. Chicagoland. Atlanta. Indianapolis. Iowa. Seven second-place finishes, and not one trip to victory lane.
He carried a 33-race winless streak into the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington on September 6, the opening race of the Chase. At Darlington he won Stage 2 and Stage 3, ran down Kyle Larson and passed him with 12 laps to go, then beat Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Ty Gibbs to the line by 1.038 seconds. It was his 14th Cup win, and it came in one of the sport's crown jewels. "I'm just so, so proud of all of these guys on this No. 20 car," he said afterward.

Bristol is the track that explains him
If you want one track that sums up Christopher Bell, it is Bristol Motor Speedway, and the Cup Series happens to be headed there this Saturday for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.
Bell has won a NASCAR race in all three national series at Bristol. He won there in the Xfinity Series on April 6, 2019. He won the Bristol Night Race in the Cup Series in September 2025. Then in April 2026 he went back in a Truck for Halmar Friesen Racing and won that one too, his first Truck Series win since 2017. That made him the 11th driver in history to sweep all three national series at the same track, and he has now done it at three different tracks: New Hampshire, Atlanta and Bristol.
That is the real answer to what makes Bell good. He is not a specialist. He wins on concrete short tracks, on road courses, on intermediates, on dirt, in trucks he has barely driven. Put him in something with four wheels and he finds the fast way around.
The dirt roots never left, either. When he went back to the Chili Bowl in 2025, the story was how much the equipment had changed while he was away.

Where he stands in the Chase
The 2026 Chase runs 10 races with no elimination rounds. All 16 drivers run all 10, and the most points at the end wins it at Homestead-Miami. That format rewards exactly the kind of season Bell has had, because consistency counts every week instead of only inside a three-race window.
After the Enjoy Illinois 300 at Gateway on September 13, where Bell was caught in a late wreck and finished 19th, he sits third in the Chase on 2,150 points, 18 behind Denny Hamlin and nine behind Kyle Larson. With eight races left, 18 points is nothing.
Bell is 31 years old, he is in top equipment, and he has finished top five in Cup points in each of the last four seasons. He has never won a Cup championship. That is the one box left, and this is the format most likely to let him check it.
The Bottom Line
Christopher Bell is the most complete racer in the Cup Series garage who has not won a title. Forty-one national series wins, a Truck championship, three Chili Bowls and a clean sweep of all three NASCAR series at three different tracks say he can win anywhere. Seven runner-ups before a Southern 500 breakthrough say 2026 has made him earn it. Third in the Chase with eight to go says he is right there.
