Road America Fan Guide: Cooler Policy, Bag Policy and What to Bring (2026)

The Short Version

Coolers: allowed. Road America's own FAQ says you can bring your own beverages, food, grills and coolers. The track does not publish a cooler size limit.
Bags: there is no clear-bag rule and no published bag size limit, but staff reserve the right to search all property and vehicles entering the facility.
Food and drink: carry-ins are allowed onto the property, just not into concession stand seating areas.
Leave home: glass containers, weapons of any kind, drones, fireworks, and any golf cart, ATV or unlicensed vehicle.
Bring: a folding chair. There is no assigned seating anywhere on the 640 acres.

Road America Cooler Policy

Road America is one of the friendliest carry-in tracks in American racing, and the official FAQ says it plainly. Carry-ins are allowed into the property, and you can bring your own beverages, food, grills and coolers and have a picnic in the open grass areas or at your campsite. There is no published cooler size limit, no soft-sided-only rule and no separate cooler ticket. Pack the cooler you actually own.

Two limits matter. Glass containers of any type are prohibited, so cans and plastic only. And carry-ins are not permitted in concession stand locations or adjoining seating areas, with the track also asking fans not to tailgate near those areas. Eat your own food out on the grass, not at a picnic table next to a food stand. If you grill, extinguish the coals and drop them in the labeled hot ash containers, not a trash bin.

Road America Bag Policy

Road America does not publish a clear-bag policy or a maximum bag size in its general rules or its FAQ. There is no stadium-style bag rule here, which fits a facility built around free roaming rather than fixed grandstand entry points.

What the rules do say is that staff reserve the right to search all property and vehicles entering the facility, and that prohibited items found at security inspections must either go back to your vehicle or be discarded. Unlawful items are confiscated. Pack a normal backpack or cooler bag, but pack it clean.

Prohibited Items at Road America

The track's "What to Leave at Home" list and its general rules cover these:

Personal golf carts, ATVs and unlicensed vehicles, which are impounded on arrival until the end of the event.
Firearms and fireworks. Weapons of any type are strictly prohibited, and that includes permit holders.
Drones and any unmanned aircraft. Road America is a no-drone zone, and aerial photography from elevated rigs like balloons, kites and telescoping poles is also prohibited.
Glass containers of any type.
Offensive or divisive signage.
Stand-up scooters without a manufacturer-installed seat, plus UTVs, dirt bikes, Segways and homemade or modified vehicles. The track's shorthand: if it does not have a license, it does not come in.
Spectator trailers, which the rules note are no longer permitted through the gates for the IndyCar and IMSA weekends.
Anything else that creates a safety hazard or takes away from other guests' enjoyment.

What You Can Bring In

Coolers, your own food, your own non-glass beverages, and a grill.
Folding chairs and blankets. The rules tell you outright to bring a chair or blankets to enjoy the race.
Canopies and EZ-Ups, with conditions. They cannot block another fan's view, must sit at least 10 feet off the fence, cannot be tied to track property, and cannot be left up overnight. Large party tents need prior arrangement.
Bicycles, on the perimeter access roads only. Walk the bike through the paddock, and run a white front light and a red rear light visible from 250 feet.
Pets, though the track discourages it. Leashed, cleaned up after, no buildings, and no paddock areas during spectator events. ADA service animals are the exception.

Seating, Viewing and the Layout

Road America is 4.048 miles and 14 turns spread over 640 acres of Wisconsin countryside, and it has run that same Grand Prix layout since it opened in September 1955. The single most important thing to know before you buy a ticket: there is no assigned seating anywhere. Seating and bleachers are first-come, first-serve, and your ticket lets you roam the whole property, paddock included.

Your seat is whatever you carry in. Fans set up at Canada Corner, at the Kink and at Turn 5. Big screens run near Turns 1, 3, 5, 7 and 12, plus the Road America Center and Victory Lane, and the live call is on 87.7 FM or the track app. One courtesy rule does get enforced: fans are discouraged from reserving a viewing area with chairs, EZ-Ups or ropes, and anything left up overnight in general admission areas gets removed and confiscated by security.

Getting There and Race Day Basics

The track sits at N7390 Highway 67 near Elkhart Lake in Sheboygan County, about an hour north of Milwaukee. General admission parking is free with the purchase of a ticket. A Preferred Parking pass runs $30 and covers Thursday through Sunday in a designated area by the VIP Tower with easy walk-in access to the paddock, though Road America reserves the right to charge for general parking at select events.

A few things worth knowing before you point the car north:

Kids get in free. Children 16 and under are free with a paying adult at all public events, and students with a current-year ID get $10 off at the gate.
Paddock access is included with daily tickets, weekend tickets and season passes, along with free general parking.
Driving the grounds is restricted on IndyCar weekend. At most events you can use your car to get around. The track's FAQ calls out IndyCar and IMSA as the weekends where facility access is restricted, so plan on walking or reserving a golf cart in advance.
Free shuttles run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during most public events. Handicap parking is along the south edge of the VIP lot and at the Administrative Office between the Main Gate and Gate 6.
Rideshare drop-off and pickup is inside Gate 6, across from Registration.
Camping needs the proper tickets, wristbands and site hangtags for an extra fee. Do not bring firewood from outside Sheboygan County, because the area sits in an emerald ash borer zone. Buy it at the track.

Fan Tips

Wear real shoes. Road America is a park, not a stadium, and walking the full 4.048-mile loop over a weekend is normal. Bring sunscreen and rain gear both, because everything runs rain or shine and there is little cover at the far corners. Pack the cooler heavy on water, and download the track app before you leave home for schedules, restroom and concession locations and wayfinding, because cell service degrades as the crowd grows.

Then move around. Fans who plant in one spot all day miss the point of the place. Christian Lundgaard won the 2026 XPEL Grand Prix at Road America in the Arrow McLaren car after Alex Palou took the pole, and the passing that decides those races happens at Turn 5, at Canada Corner and out of the Carousel, all of which look nothing from the fence like they do on TV.
