Ryan Blaney: 19 Wins, a 2023 Title, and the Third Generation of an Ohio Racing Family

Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing Driver Spotlight - where we pull one Cup Series driver into the garage, look under the hood at their career, and tell you what makes them tick. This week: the number 12.

The Short Version

Ryan Blaney is the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion and the driver of the number 12 Ford for Team Penske. He is the third generation of a racing family out of Ohio, and the first one of them to win a NASCAR title. He has 19 Cup wins, more than 400 starts, and he has made the playoffs nine years running. If you want one line on him: he is quietly one of the most consistent drivers in the garage, and he is at his best when the race gets messy.

From Ohio Dirt to the Cup Series

Ryan Blaney was born December 31, 1993, in Hartford Township, Ohio, into a family that had already spent decades at race tracks. His grandfather Lou Blaney was a dirt modified legend in the Midwest. His father Dave Blaney raced sprint cars and then spent years in the Cup Series. Ryan is the only son, with two sisters, and he grew up around the sport the way other kids grow up around a family business.

He came up through quarter midgets and late models, winning a national quarter midget title in 2009 and a super late model championship in 2011. He moved into the NASCAR Truck Series and won Rookie of the Year in 2013, then took the fan-voted Most Popular Driver award in the Truck Series in 2014. That same year he made his first Cup start at Kansas.

His first full Cup rides came with Wood Brothers Racing in the famous number 21. That is where he broke through. In June 2017 he won the Axalta presents the Pocono 400 at Pocono, holding off Kevin Harvick for his first Cup victory and the Wood Brothers' first win in years. He moved to the number 12 at Team Penske full time in 2018 and has been there ever since.

The Championship and the Signature Wins

Blaney's 2023 season is the one that changed how people talk about him. He won the Coca-Cola 600 in May, then got hot when it counted, and at Phoenix in November he passed Kyle Larson with 20 laps to go to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship. It was Team Penske's second straight title after Joey Logano's in 2022, and it made Ryan the first Blaney to win a NASCAR championship. He came right back and made the Championship 4 again in 2024, finishing runner-up to Logano.

He also owns two of the closest finishes in modern NASCAR. He won at Talladega in 2019 and again in 2020, and both were decided by 0.007 seconds. That is about the length of a bumper. He added the All-Star Race in 2022 for good measure.

Where He Is Right Now

2025 was the best statistical year of his career. He won four times, at Nashville, at Daytona in the summer race, at New Hampshire, and at Phoenix in the season finale. He put up 15 top-five finishes, the most in the Cup Series that year, and led 852 laps. He still finished sixth in points, which tells you how deep the field is now.

2026 has been more of the same. He won at Phoenix in March, rallying from a pit road problem to take the lead with 10 laps left. Then in July he was flat dominant at Atlanta. He started on the pole, swept both stages, led 171 of 263 laps, and won in overtime in a race that ran past midnight. That one was Ford's 750th Cup Series win. He added a pole at Iowa in August, his third of the year, and he sits third in the championship standings with the playoffs coming.

Off the Track

The most important thing Blaney does away from the car has nothing to do with racing. In 2018 he and his family started the Ryan Blaney Family Foundation, a nonprofit focused on brain health. It supports people and families dealing with Alzheimer's disease and with concussions. The reason is personal. His grandfather Lou Blaney, the dirt track legend the family is named for, had Alzheimer's and died in 2009. In 2023 the foundation handed the Alzheimer's Association a check for $50,000 for research and care programs.

He married model Gianna Tulio in December 2024, and their first child, a son named Charley, was born in November 2025. He lives in Mooresville, North Carolina. He is a serious Star Wars fan and a Trailer Park Boys fan, and he has the tattoos to prove the first one. He also has a sprint car inked on his left side and the number 10 on his chest, which was the number he ran most often growing up. He picked up golf in recent years and plays a lot of it with Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin.

The Bottom Line

Ryan Blaney does not talk himself up and he does not need to. He is a champion, he has 19 wins, and he has been in the playoff conversation every single year for nearly a decade. He is also the guy who finally put a NASCAR title on a family name that had been chasing one for three generations. That is the part he would probably tell you matters most.
