The catch is the material and where you are sitting. Hard-sided coolers appear on the track's grandstand entry prohibited list, so the chest that lives in your trunk is a campground item, not a grandstand item. Thermoses are on that same grandstand list, and so is glass in any form. Measure the outside of the soft cooler before you leave home, because that is the dimension a gate attendant checks.
Ice itself is on the permitted list, which is worth knowing at a track where race weekends land in warm weather and the walk from the parking fields is a real walk. Fill the cooler at home rather than counting on buying ice inside.
Bag Policy at Watkins Glen International
Watkins Glen does not run a clear-bag policy for general admission, which puts it on the easier end of the scale. You get a maximum of two bags per person through the admission gates. Backpacks, diaper bags, clutch bags and fanny packs are all permitted as long as none exceeds 18 x 18 x 14 inches.
You can mix and match those two items with one restriction: the soft-sided cooler is limited to one per guest and counts toward your two. A soft cooler plus a backpack is the standard setup and clears the gate without a conversation. Anything larger than the allowed size is turned away at grandstand entry, so the oversized duffel goes back to the car.
There is one place a clear bag does come into play. The track's permitted items list specifies that pre-packaged and sealed food and beverage items must be carried in a clear bag or a soft-sided cooler. Cameras, binoculars, scanners and headsets also have to be worn over the neck or belt, or carried in a clear bag. A cheap clear tote in the trunk solves both of those in one move.
Every bag brought inside is subject to search. Guests entering the grandstands may go through metal-detector screening plus a visual and bag inspection, so the track's own advice is to arrive early, travel light and have your phone, keys and camera out before you reach the checkpoint.
Prohibited Items at Watkins Glen International
Watkins Glen publishes two lists, and this trips people up. The first applies to the property as a whole:
- Weapons of any description, and any firearm
- Knives longer than 3 inches closed or longer than 6 inches open
- Utility and multi-purpose tools with a blade longer than 3 inches
- Live or excessively loud music
- ATVs, dirt bikes, mopeds, motorcycles, skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates and E-bikes
- Super soakers, swimming pools and waterslides
- Unregistered golf carts
- Circus or party tents over 15 feet x 15 feet, and awnings over 20 feet x 10 feet
- Box, rental or lift trucks, cargo vehicles and cargo trailers
- Obscene or indecent language and imagery, including Confederate flags
- Fireworks
- Dry ice
- Laser pointers
- Noisemakers and air horns
- Aerosol cans, except sunscreen, sunblock, hand sanitizer and bug spray
- Tripods and monopods, whether solid or collapsible
- Illegal substances of any kind
- Drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles
- Frisbees, balloons, beach balls, water balloon launchers and any other projectile
- Obscene or indecent clothing
The second list is stricter and applies specifically at grandstand entry. On top of everything above, these are turned away at the stands:
- Hard-sided coolers
- Thermoses
- Insulated cups of any size
- Umbrellas
- Wagons
- Strollers
- Any backpack, bag or container larger than the allowed size
- Seat cushions with metal components
- Glass containers
- Smoking, which is not permitted in the grandstands
Read those two lists together before you pack. The facility permitted list allows insulated cups up to 64 ounces, but the grandstand entry list prohibits insulated cups at any size, so if your seat is in the stands, pack to the stricter rule and leave the tumbler in the car. Same story with umbrellas, wagons and strollers. Bring a poncho instead of an umbrella, and plan on carrying what you bring, because the wagon is not making it up to your section.
Drones deserve their own note. Watkins Glen prohibits drone use across the entire property, not just over the racing surface.
What You Can Bring Into Watkins Glen International
The permitted list is generous once you are inside the size limits:
- Two bags per person up to 18 x 18 x 14 inches
- One soft-sided cooler per guest up to 14 x 14 x 14 inches
- Ice
- Pre-packaged and sealed food and beverage items in a clear bag or soft-sided cooler, including alcoholic beverages, with no glass containers, unless prohibited by state law
- Sunscreen, sunblock, hand sanitizer and bug spray in aerosol, gel or liquid form
- Cameras, binoculars, scanners and headsets worn over the neck or belt, or carried in a clear bag
- iPads, tablets and laptop computers
- Seat cushions without metal components
- Cigarettes and lighters
- Service animals
- Nationality flags on a pencil-sized wooden stick, as long as they do not block anyone's view
Two notes on that list. Alcohol you bring yourself is allowed at Watkins Glen, which is not true everywhere, but the no-glass rule is absolute, so cans only. And dogs are permitted only in the camping areas, on a leash no longer than six feet. Certified service dogs are the exception and are welcome throughout.
Grandstands, Seating and Track Layout
NASCAR runs the short course at The Glen, a 2.45-mile road course with seven turns and banking that varies from 6 to 10 degrees. The longer 3.4-mile Grand Prix course, the one that adds the Boot, has 11 turns and is used by other series. The frontstretch measures 2,150 feet, the backstretch 2,400 feet, and the track width varies from 36 to 48 feet, averaging 38 feet.
The number that explains the place is the elevation change: 115 feet. This is not a flat road course drawn on an airfield. The track climbs out of the 90 through the esses and drops back down through the back half, and where you sit changes what you actually see. Frontstretch seating gives you the start-finish line, pit road and the run down to the first corner. Seats and viewing areas up by the esses give you the best sightline on the section where the passes get set up.
Seat cushions are permitted as long as they have no metal components. Cushions with metal are prohibited at grandstand entry, so check the frame on the folding stadium seat before you pack it. There is no smoking in the grandstands.
Golf carts on the property are for ADA purposes only and require an approved permit. Permits are available at Gates 1, 2 and 6, the driver has to be licensed and at least 18, and no alcohol is allowed in the cart. Guests who are disabled may bring a commercially manufactured single-person electric convenience vehicle.
Getting There and Race-Day Tips
Watkins Glen International sits at 2790 County Route 16, Watkins Glen, New York 14891, roughly three miles south of the village. Daytime parking is available to all guests in lots outside the admission gates. Nothing stays overnight in those lots, and vehicles left in the fields after 8:00 p.m. are subject to tow at the owner's expense.
Infield parking is limited. For the NASCAR event, infield vehicular access is only for guests with an infield reserved site, and overnight infield parking is treated as camping and is prohibited.
Re-entry works, but there is a step to it that catches people every year. All admission tickets must be scanned on the way out at any open gate. If you walk out without scanning, that ticket is void and you will have to buy a new one to get back in. The track says no exceptions.
If something goes wrong on site, text 69050 and start your message with WGIFAN followed by a space, then your need and your location. The same line handles a disabled vehicle, in which case include your name, location and the make of the car. The Infield Care Center is open 24 hours at the corner of Tompkins and Finger Lakes roads, and mobile medical teams rove the facility during NASCAR weekend.
Camping and Infield Rules
NASCAR camping gates open at 7:00 a.m. on the Wednesday of race week for all campgrounds. Quiet hours run 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. across every camping area, and generators are not permitted during those hours unless they are needed for medical purposes with a permit sticker.
Each site is limited to one RV and one tent, one pop-up trailer and one tent, or two tents, and all of it has to fit inside the site boundaries. For the NASCAR event, reserved sites are issued two vehicle passes. Campers park with the nose or tail of the RV or trailer facing the track so they block the least amount of viewing area, and nothing may sit within 15 feet of the spectator fence.
Flagpoles have real rules here. Only non-metallic poles are allowed, meaning fiberglass, PVC or vinyl, with no steel or aluminum. Maximum height is 15 feet from the ground, and no flagpole may go within 20 feet of an overhead electrical line. Tunnels close to non-emergency traffic at 11:00 p.m. during all events, and no vehicle over 7 feet 10 inches other than a recognized RV is admitted. Tents larger than 10 x 20 require a permit fee and a certificate of insurance. Camping on the viewing berm is not allowed.
Fan Tips
Pack a clear tote. It is not required for general bags, but it is the specified carrier for food, drinks and camera gear, and having one removes every gate question at once.
Bring the scanner. The Glen is a road course where strategy calls decide the race, and the spotter and crew chief channels tell you a pit call is coming a lap before the broadcast does.
Poncho, not umbrella. Umbrellas are prohibited at grandstand entry and Finger Lakes weather changes fast.
Walk the property early. The elevation that makes this track great also makes it a hike, and the good standing spots along the esses fill up well before the green flag.
