Milwaukee Mile Fan Guide: Cooler Policy, Bag Policy and What to Bring (2026)

Cooler Policy at the Milwaukee Mile

The Milwaukee Mile cooler policy is short and it is specific. Coolers larger than 9 by 10 by 12 inches are not permitted in the facility. The cooler must be soft sided, and Wisconsin State Fair Park states that it can only contain sealed bottled water and ice.

That last line is what separates this track from most ovals on the IndyCar calendar. At a lot of venues the cooler is your lunch. Here it is your water supply. Hard-sided coolers are on the prohibited list outright, and so are Camelback style hydration packs, so the soft 9 by 10 by 12 bag is the only cooler that gets through.

There is one real exception and it is written into the policy. Any carry-in items for family care, such as water or snacks for children, or for medical reasons, are permitted. If you are feeding a toddler or managing a dietary condition, pack what you need and be ready to explain it at the gate.

Glass and ceramic containers are prohibited anywhere on the property, and carry-in alcohol of any kind is prohibited. Alcohol is sold at designated locations during INDYCAR Weekend to guests 21 and over with a valid photo ID.

Bag Policy at the Milwaukee Mile

The Milwaukee Mile bag policy uses the same number as the cooler. All bags, and the park lists clear bags, backpacks, purses and totes together, must be 9 by 10 by 12 inches or smaller. Every bag is subject to search before you enter State Fair Park.

Larger bags will not be permitted unless they are family care or diaper bags, or they are needed for medical reasons. The park is blunt about the fallback: lockers are not available for anyone who arrives with an oversized bag, so your only option is to walk it back to your vehicle before you enter a gate. That is a long walk from the far lots on a hot Saturday.

Empty reusable bottles, cups and souvenir cups are permitted. There is no size limit published on those, and water bottle filling stations and bubblers are spread across the park during race weekend, so an empty insulated bottle is the single best thing you can carry through the gate.

All patrons and possessions pass through metal detection on entry. Prohibited items are confiscated by Public Safety and are not returned, so anything you would be upset to lose stays in the car.

Prohibited Items at the Milwaukee Mile

This is the list Wisconsin State Fair Park publishes in its Snap-on INDYCAR Weekend event policies. Any one of these stops you at the gate:

• Illegal drugs or substances and paraphernalia
• Firearms, knives, and all other weapons or objects that could be used as weapons
• Pepper spray, mace, and tasers
• Fireworks, flares, sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, or explosives
• Flammable or combustible materials, except small lighters
• Any bag over 9 by 10 by 12 inches, including clear bags
• Hard-sided coolers
• Camelback style hydration packs
• Large stick umbrellas or golf umbrellas
• Picnic baskets
• Outside food and beverages, unless needed for infants or dietary needs
• Glass or ceramic containers
• Aerosol cans, with the exception of spray sunscreens
• Carry-in alcohol of any kind
• Drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles
• Pets, except service animals
• Selfie sticks, tripods, and monopods of any kind
• Signs, banners, or flags on poles
• Offensive, abusive, or obscene materials
• Laser pointers
• Lawn chairs, folding chairs, or stadium seats
• Strollers and wagons, which are only allowed in the Free Fan Zone
• Tents, canopies, and tables
• Scaffolding and ladders
• Skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates, or inline skates
• Foot powered or electric scooters
• Bicycles, tricycles, or unicycles
• Hula hoops, noise makers, horns, or balloons
• Frisbees, beach balls, or any other projectiles
• Professional grade cameras and video equipment
• Golf carts, ATVs, UTVs, ATCs, or electric bicycles for personal use during the event
• Printed materials, stickers, or promotional items without written approval

Three of those catch people every single year. The umbrella line only bans large stick and golf umbrellas, so a compact umbrella is your rain plan. Strollers and wagons are allowed in the Free Fan Zone but not in the grandstands, which changes how a family moves through the day. And professional grade camera gear is out, though personal cameras are welcome as long as they fit inside your bag.

What You Can Bring Into the Milwaukee Mile

The permitted list is shorter than most, and it comes straight from the park:

• One soft-sided cooler up to 9 by 10 by 12 inches, holding sealed bottled water and ice
• One bag per the same 9 by 10 by 12 inch limit, subject to search
• One sealed bottled water per person
• Empty reusable bottles, cups and souvenir cups
• Carry-in items for family care or medical needs, including water and snacks for children
• Seat cushions without metal components
• Scanners and radio headsets
• Personal cameras that fit inside your bag
• Spray sunscreen, which is the one aerosol exception
• Compact umbrellas, since only large stick and golf umbrellas are banned
• Service animals
• Collapsible strollers and wagons, in the Free Fan Zone only

Bring the scanner. The Mile is a flat one-mile oval and the field spreads out fast, so the radio traffic is how you follow strategy on a 250-lap race. Grandstands, Seating and the One-Mile Oval

The Milwaukee Mile sits inside Wisconsin State Fair Park at 640 South 84th Street in West Allis, just west of downtown Milwaukee. It opened on September 11, 1903, it was paved in 1954, and it is billed as the oldest operating motor speedway in the world. The oval measures 1.015 miles with 9.25 degrees of banking in the turns and 2.5 degrees on the straights, and the grandstands seat roughly 37,000.

The banking is the thing to understand before you pick a seat. At 9.25 degrees this is a flat track by oval standards, cars run close to the wall through the middle of the corner, and a second lane only shows up once the tires go away. A higher row on the frontstretch gives you all four corners at once, which matters on a lap this short when the leaders reach lapped traffic inside 20 laps.

Grandstand tickets also get you into the infield. There is no general admission infield ticket, but the park states that anyone holding a General Admission or Reserved Grandstand ticket can walk into the infield to spectate. Three jumbotrons cover it, one at Turn 1, one near the start finish line and one at Turn 4. Seat assignments are the same for Saturday and Sunday, and Friday is general admission.

Seat cushions are allowed as long as they have no metal components and do not block anyone's view. Lawn chairs, folding chairs and stadium seats are not allowed in the grandstands at all, so the cushion is the trade. Smoking, including vapes and e-cigarettes, is not permitted in the grandstands or within 20 feet of any building or designated seating area.

Getting There and Race-Day Tips

Over half of State Fair Park is parking, and it is run by Interstate Parking. General parking is 15 dollars on Friday and 25 dollars on Saturday and Sunday. Infield parking runs 20 dollars Friday and 40 dollars Saturday and Sunday. Motorcycles are 10 dollars Friday and 13 dollars on the race days, and motorcycle parking is only sold at the gate. Lots open at 11 a.m. Friday, 6 a.m. Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

General parking enters through Gate 1 at West Greenfield Avenue and South 79th Street, Gate 4 on South 84th Street just north of Greenfield, and Gates 7 and 8 on West Kearney Street between South 84th and South 76th. Infield parking uses Gate 5 at West Schlinger Avenue and South 84th. Advance passes are online only, and day-of parking at the gate is credit or debit only. Vehicles over 20 feet including the hitch are treated as oversized and cost more.

One local rule trips up first-timers. Authorities only allow right hand turns into State Fair Park along all the bordering streets, which are South 84th Street, West Greenfield Avenue, West Kearney Street and South 76th Street. Map your approach so you are turning right.

If you would rather not drive, rideshare and taxis enter at Gate 4 and the pickup and drop-off zone is just outside the Main Entrance on the west side of the park. Milwaukee County Transit routes 18 and 33 both serve the park. Free bicycle parking is at the Main Entrance on Adler Street near I-94 and at South Entrance A at Greenfield and South 81st, and you need to bring your own lock because bikes cannot come inside.

Re-entry is allowed. Get a handstamp on your way out and you can come back through the Milwaukee Mile ticket entrances, though re-entry is not allowed into any State Fair Park parking lot. Cash, credit and debit are all accepted at admission entrances and parking gates, and there are ATMs throughout the park.

The 2026 Snap-on INDYCAR Weekend Schedule

This is the only NTT INDYCAR SERIES doubleheader on the 2026 calendar, and both races pay full points.

• Friday, August 28: gates open at noon, practice sessions
• Saturday, August 29: gates open at 7 a.m., qualifying and the Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250 at 1:30 p.m. CT
• Sunday, August 30: gates open at 7:30 a.m., INDY NXT by Firestone at 10 a.m. CT and the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 at noon CT

Neither the NTT INDYCAR SERIES nor INDY NXT runs in the rain on an oval like this one. If the event is postponed, hold your ticket, because it will be honored for gate admission on the new date. All ticket sales are final and there are no refunds.

Kids 11 and under get a free General Admission grandstand ticket with the purchase of an adult General Admission ticket, issued at the admission entrances on the day. For reserved seats, everyone three and older needs their own ticket, and children two and under can sit on a lap.

Fan Tips

Carry an empty insulated bottle. With outside beverages restricted to one sealed bottled water per person, the free filling stations and bubblers are your best move on a late August afternoon in Wisconsin.

Pack to the 9 by 10 by 12 number once and be done. The cooler and the bag share the same limit here, so measure whatever you plan to carry at home rather than at a gate with no lockers behind you.

Take a cushion and skip the chair. Seat cushions without metal are permitted, folding and stadium seats are not, and 250 laps on aluminum is a long afternoon.
