Interlagos Fan Guide: Cooler Policy, Bag Policy and What to Bring (2026)

The bag policy at Interlagos

Start here, because the Interlagos bag policy is the rule that catches out visiting fans. Sao Paulo does not ask for a clear bag and it does not publish a separate backpack allowance. It bans what the organisers call voluminous objects, and the definition is refreshingly blunt: any item larger than 25 cm x 25 cm x 25 cm, or anything that cannot be stored between your feet or that takes up another person's space.

Twenty five centimetres a side is roughly a ten inch cube. That is a small daypack or a decent tote, and it is not a camera bag with a long lens in it, a backpack loaded for a full day, or a cool bag of any kind. Formula 1 also confirms that bag checks run at every entrance and advises packing light so you clear security faster. On a hot Sunday at Interlagos those queues are long enough already.

Coolers, food and drink at Interlagos

There is no cooler size to memorise, because the Interlagos cooler policy is a flat no. Formula 1's official prohibited list for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix bans coolers, thermoses and ice chests outright. The organisers separately ban styrofoam boxes and anything similar, along with cans and bottles.

Food is more generous than most circuits. You may bring up to three food items per person, properly sealed and in their original packaging. Fruit is the exception: it has to be cut and packed in clear, non-rigid packaging, so a zip-lock bag of sliced mango is fine and a whole apple is not.

Drinks are where people get caught. The organisers prohibit liquids of any kind at the gate, alcoholic and non-alcoholic alike, and glass containers and cans are banned on top of that. Plan to buy inside, and plan for how you pay: food and drink across the circuit runs on a prepaid cashless card that is valid for the three days of the event. Load it on Friday rather than in a Sunday queue.

Prohibited items at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Here is the banned list, grouped the way it is easiest to pack against.

Food and containers: coolers, thermoses and ice chests, styrofoam boxes, glass containers, cans, and liquids of any kind at the gate.

Comfort gear: chairs, seat pillows and backrests, tents and canopies, blankets, and anything over the 25 cm cube.

Camera and tech: professional image and sound equipment, professional video cameras, drones, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and camera poles.

Safety and security: firearms and weapons, knives, pepper spray, explosives, fireworks and flares, sharp objects including pointed umbrellas and stick flags, chains and wallet chains, studded belts, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, longboards, hoverboards and skates, musical instruments, horns and whistles, face-covering clothing, and animals other than trained guide dogs with documentation.

Two rules deserve their own line. Umbrellas are the big one. The official event rules say entry carrying an umbrella will not be permitted, for safety reasons, and Formula 1's own list bans any umbrella with a pointed tip. In a month this wet, that matters, so read the weather section below before you pack. Flags are welcome up to 2.00 m x 1.50 m, but not attached to a pole and not the giant bandeirao size.

November weather and how to actually pack for it

Sao Paulo in November is late spring, and the numbers explain every packing decision you are about to make. Using the Brazilian met office normals for 1991 to 2020, the city averages a daily high of 26.9 C, about 80 F, and a daily low of 17.3 C, about 63 F. November brings 143.9 mm of rain across an average of 11 wet days, so roughly one day in three gets a soaking, usually as a fast afternoon thunderstorm rather than steady drizzle. The average ultraviolet index for the month is 12, which is as high as that scale goes in practice.

So: a hat with a brim and real sunscreen are not optional, and because the umbrella is staying at the hotel, your rain plan has to be something you wear. A packable rain jacket or a poncho folds down small enough to live inside a 25 cm bag and is the only thing standing between you and a wet walk back. Bring a light layer for the evening too, because 63 F feels colder when you are damp and standing still.

Getting in, gates and tickets

Do not drive. The circuit has no parking area during the event and the organisers say so plainly. The official race-weekend transport is the GPSP Express train out of Pinheiros station and the SPTrans express buses, both of which drop you close to the gates. In 2025 those ran at 35 reais for a train round trip and 5 reais for the bus, but confirm the current fares and departure points on the official mobility site before the weekend.

Interlagos has multiple entrances and your ticket tells you which gate is yours, so check it before you set off rather than walking the perimeter. The F1 Race Guide app carries the circuit map. Children under five are not allowed into the autodrome at all, everybody else needs their own ticket, and the Heineken Village section is 18 and over. Every grandstand, the Fanzone and the VIP areas are accessible for fans with disabilities or reduced mobility, with matching restroom facilities.

One format note worth knowing. After hosting a sprint every year since 2021, Interlagos goes back to the traditional weekend in 2026: three practice sessions, qualifying on Saturday, and the 71-lap Grand Prix on Sunday. Friday is practice, not a competitive session, which changes what a Friday ticket is worth.

The circuit itself

Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace is 4.309 km, 2.677 miles, of counterclockwise track with 15 turns, and the race runs 71 laps for 305.879 km. It opened in May 1940 and took the Jose Carlos Pace name in 1985. Valtteri Bottas holds the lap record at 1:10.540, set for Mercedes in 2018. Interlagos means between lakes, a reference to the Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs the circuit sits between, and the ground it is built on rolls hard enough that you can see cars climbing and dropping from almost any seat. The first corner sequence, the S do Senna, is where the field arrives three abreast on lap one and where most tickets are worth their money.
