The Short Version
Here is what most fans need before they leave the house for Richmond Raceway:

The part that stops people at the gate is the material. Measure the outside of the cooler at home, not the inside. That is the dimension a gate attendant checks, and Richmond does not hold restricted items for you. The track's policy is that restricted items may not be left at the gate area, and anything left unattended there gets thrown away.
Ice is on the permitted list on its own, which matters at an August night race in Virginia. Pre-race runs before sundown and the heat sits on the grandstand well into the evening. Pack the cooler cold at home rather than counting on finding ice inside.
Bag Policy at Richmond Raceway
Richmond does not run a clear-bag policy for general admission, which puts it on the easier end of the Cup schedule. You get a maximum of two bags per person through the admission gates. Backpacks, diaper bags, clutch bags and fanny packs are all permitted as long as none of them exceeds 18 x 18 x 14 inches.
You can mix and match those two items freely, with one restriction: the soft-sided cooler is limited to one per guest and it counts toward your two. A soft cooler plus a backpack is the standard Richmond setup and it clears security without a conversation.
The track's own fan guide puts the bag rule at the top of its race-ready checklist for a reason. Keep the bag simple and under the size limit and you walk through. Show up with an oversized duffel and you are making a trip back to the car in the Henrico County heat.

- Unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones
- Laser pointers
- Noisemakers and air horns
- Aerosol cans, other than sunscreen, sunblock, hand sanitizer and bug spray
- Selfie sticks
- Tripods and monopods, solid or collapsible
- Frisbees, balloons, beach balls or any other projectile
- Electric bicycles, skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates and bicycles
- Illegal substances of any kind
- Displays of the confederate flag
- Obscene or indecent clothing
Richmond's list also restricts knives by blade length, and the published wording on that one is easy to misread. The safe move is to leave blades in the car entirely, or call Guest Services at 866.455.7223 before you travel and ask about your specific item.
Smoking is worth its own line here. The grandstand seating areas are smoke-free, and smoking is also prohibited in front of the grandstands, in the portals leading to the seats and inside all buildings. E-cigarettes and vapes are not permitted in the grandstands. You can smoke in the open-air areas beneath and behind the grandstands, on the Midway and in the parking lots and campgrounds.
What You Can Bring Into Richmond Raceway
Richmond publishes a permitted list as well, and it is a generous one. Through the admission gates you can bring:
- Pre-packaged and sealed food and beverages in a clear bag or soft-sided cooler, including alcoholic beverages, with no glass containers
- Ice
- Insulated cups up to 64 ounces
- Sunscreen, sunblock, hand sanitizer and bug spray, in aerosol, gel or liquid form
- Cameras, binoculars, scanners and headsets that can be worn over the neck or belt or carried in a clear bag
- iPads, tablets and laptop computers
- Seat cushions without metal components
- Cigarettes and lighters
- Service animals
- Nationality flags on a pencil-sized wooden stick, as long as they do not block another fan's view
Two of those are quietly the most useful. The 64-ounce insulated cup limit is high enough that one good tumbler keeps a drink cold through a 400-lap race. And bringing your own scanner or headset means you are not renting at the gate, though Richmond does offer scanner rental if you would rather travel light.
Grandstands, Seating and Track Layout
Richmond is a 0.75-mile D-shaped oval with 14 degrees of banking in the corners, 8 degrees on the frontstretch and 2 degrees on the backstretch. It is a short track that races like an intermediate, which is why fans call it the action track. The Cook Out 400 runs 400 laps for 300 miles.
The seating wraps the frontstretch and both ends of it, so there is no bad sightline in the way there is at a superspeedway. From almost any seat you can see the entire racetrack at once, which is the real argument for a Richmond ticket over a bigger venue.
For accessible seating, Richmond lists the Veranda Platform, the Dogwood Grandstands, the Dogwood Tower and the Commonwealth Tower, and every grandstand entrance has either a ramp or an elevator. If you hold an Infield FanGrounds pass, you reach the infield through the Fan Pedestrian Tunnel, which sits inside Grandstand Gate 40 in Turn 1.
Getting There and Race-Day Tips
Richmond Raceway sits at 600 East Laburnum Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, inside the city rather than out in a field somewhere. That is a genuine advantage. Hotels, food and the interstate are all close, and the track offers both reserved and free parking options for race weekend.
Richmond is cashless for NASCAR event weekend. The track accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express, so leave the cash envelope at home and bring a card you can tap.
Download your ticket to your phone before you leave. Richmond pushes mobile tickets and the NASCAR Tracks App hard in its own fan guide, and gate entry moves faster when you are not fighting the parking-lot signal to load a barcode.
One more piece of race-day timing: food and partner displays in the Fan Zone start breaking down when the race starts. If the Fan Zone is part of your plan, do it early rather than saving it for a caution.
Fan Tips for Richmond
Bring a poncho, not an umbrella. Umbrellas are prohibited inside the venue and Virginia in August produces the kind of pop-up shower that soaks a grandstand in four minutes.
Protect your ears. Richmond is a three-quarter-mile bullring with 40 cars on it, and the noise bounces off the grandstands in a way it does not at a big track. Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones are strongly recommended, and they are close to mandatory for kids.
Sunscreen and sunglasses still apply at a night race. Pre-race activity happens before sundown and the sun is on the frontstretch seats for hours before the green flag.
Wear real shoes. Between parking, the Midway, the Fan Zone and the climb to your seat, you are on your feet for most of a day.
Toss a Sharpie in the bag. It is the track's own tip, and it is a good one - drivers and personalities move through the Fan Zone and the Midway all afternoon, and nothing kills an autograph opportunity like nobody having a pen.

Camping at Richmond is reserved RV and tent camping, with on-site propane refills and roaming water and pump trucks. There is one shower location, next to the Main Campground and the accessible parking lot as you come into the Midway.
