Why Nobody Wins Alone at Daytona: Drafting and "The Big One," Explained
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing Wednesday Tech Breakdown - where we take one confusing part of NASCAR and make it make sense. No engineering degree required.
The Short Version
At Daytona and Talladega, air matters more than horsepower. A car by itself has to shove all that air out of the way alone, so it slows down. Cars lined up nose to tail share the work and all go faster, which is called drafting. That is why 40 cars run in one giant pack, and it is also why one small mistake can wipe out half the field in what fans call the big one. NASCAR just changed the rules for the August 29 Daytona race to shake that pack up.
First, Understand Drag
Stick your hand out the car window on the highway. Feel that push back against your palm? That is drag - air resisting anything trying to move through it. Drag gets much worse the faster you go. At 60 mph it is a nuisance. At 190 mph around Daytona's 2.5-mile oval, drag is the single biggest thing holding a race car back.
Daytona has 31-degree banking in the corners and Talladega has 33 degrees, so drivers barely lift off the gas. Nobody is braking, nobody is really turning the wheel much. When you take away braking and cornering, the only fight left is the fight against air. And that fight is one a single car cannot win.
What Drafting Actually Is
The lead car punches a hole in the air. Right behind it, the air is churned up and thinned out, a pocket engineers call the wake. A car tucked into that pocket has less air to push, so it needs less power to hold the same speed. Think of walking behind someone into a strong wind. You are doing the same walk with a lot less effort.
Here is the part fans miss: the lead car gets faster too. When a second car fills in behind, it partly plugs the low-pressure hole the leader drags around, so the leader is not being tugged backward as hard. Two cars nose to tail are faster than either one alone. Twenty cars nose to tail are faster still. That is why the pack forms and why a car that falls out of line gets left behind so quickly.
Meet the Moves: Runs, Bump Drafts and Side Drafts
Everything you hear on the broadcast at a superspeedway comes out of that one idea.
A run is the speed you build by drafting. Stack up two or three cars behind you and your line starts closing on the car ahead. Commentators will say a driver "has a run" - it means he is arriving faster than the guy in front of him.
The slingshot is what you do with a run. You ride in the wake until the last second, then dart out of line and use your extra speed to fire past before the air slows you down.
Bump drafting is a nudge from behind. A tap on the rear bumper physically shoves the lead car and squeezes the two together, cutting drag even more. It works, and it is also how spins start, which is why NASCAR watches it closely in the corners.
Side drafting is the sneaky one. Instead of pushing a rival, you pull alongside and aim your nose at the air coming off his back quarter panel. You dump dirty, high-pressure air onto his rear end and slow him down without ever touching him.
What Changed for This Season
On July 15, NASCAR announced a rebuilt superspeedway package that debuts at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona on August 29, which is also the regular-season finale that sets the playoff field.

Two numbers matter. The rear spoiler shrinks from 7 inches to 4 inches, the same height the cars run at intermediate tracks. And the engine's tapered spacer - a restrictor plate that limits how much air the engine can gulp - drops to 27/32 of an inch, taking power from about 510 horsepower down to about 465. NASCAR also added new spoiler braces and redesigned the spoiler deflection device. Safety hardware, including the A-post flap, stays the same.
Why do both at once? Less spoiler means less drag, which means more speed. Less horsepower pulls that speed back down so the pack does not get dangerously fast. NASCAR expects single cars to qualify about 2 to 3 mph quicker while pack speeds stay roughly where they are. The real target is the run. Its computer airflow modeling says a driver who builds a 5-mph run is now more likely to actually complete the pass instead of stalling out in clean air.
The Problem NASCAR Is Trying to Kill
Recent superspeedway races settled into two locked lanes where nobody could go anywhere, and drivers spent most of the day saving fuel instead of racing. Steve Letarte, a former championship crew chief on the working group behind the change, described the leader as "basically at terminal velocity." Denny Hamlin, a three-time Daytona 500 winner who also worked on it, put the goal plainly: "What we're essentially trying to recreate is Atlanta at Daytona and Talladega." Atlanta's tighter, higher-banked layout forces drivers to attack all day.
So Why Does One Spin Become "The Big One"?
Drafting only works if you stay close, so the whole field runs inches apart at nearly 190 mph. There is no cushion. When a car gets loose in the middle of that, the drivers behind have no room to brake and nowhere to steer, because both sides are full of cars. One spin turns into ten in about two seconds. The big one is not bad luck. It is the direct cost of the thing that makes the racing exciting.
What You Will Actually See on Track
Watch for three things at Daytona on August 29. First, whether a driver can pull out of line and keep going instead of getting swallowed. If runs survive, you will see a third lane form and the pack will churn constantly. Second, less fuel saving. If drivers have to stay on the throttle to hold position, the field will not spend 30 laps coasting in formation. Third, single-car qualifying speeds a couple mph higher than last year while the race itself looks about the same speed.
One more thing to keep in mind: NASCAR has only committed this package to Daytona so far. The next superspeedway race is Talladega in October, deep in the playoffs, and whether the 4-inch spoiler shows up there depends on how the August race goes.
The Bottom Line
At a superspeedway, the fastest car is never alone - it is the one with the most help behind it. NASCAR shrank the spoiler and trimmed the power to make that help travel a little farther, so a driver who earns a run can finally cash it in.
