Iowa Speedway Fan Guide: Cooler Policy, Bag Policy and What to Bring (2026)

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Newton, Iowa on Sunday, August 9, 2026 for the Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol, 350 laps and 306.25 miles around the 0.875-mile oval, green flag at 3:30 p.m. ET on USA. Read this part carefully before you load the car, because Iowa Speedway has one of the strictest entry policies on the Cup schedule. Show up expecting to pack a lunch the way you would at Talladega or Bristol and you are going to be turned around at the gate.

Iowa Speedway Cooler Policy

Each guest may bring one soft-sided cooler no larger than 14 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches, and it has to come through the gate empty. The only thing you may put in it is sealed bottled water, two bottles per person.

Hard-sided and foam coolers are prohibited regardless of size, so the classic 28-quart hard cooler that works at a lot of tracks will not get in here. Two details worth knowing: telescoping handles are fine as long as the cooler still fits the 14-inch dimensions, and you do not need to strip the hard plastic lining out of a soft cooler.

Insulated cups are allowed up to 64 ounces, which is the practical workaround. Bring the empty cooler and the big cup, then fill up inside.

Iowa Speedway Bag Policy

Iowa allows a maximum of two bags per person through the admission gates. Backpacks, diaper bags, clutch bags and fanny packs are all permitted as long as none of them exceeds 18 inches by 18 inches by 14 inches. There is no clear-bag requirement, which is a nice break compared with a lot of stadium venues.

You can mix and match those two bags however you want, with one limit: the soft-sided cooler counts as one cooler per guest, and you only get the one. Camera bags are allowed but cannot be larger than a standard backpack, and a camera bag counts against your two-bag allowance.

Prohibited Items at Iowa Speedway

Every bag is subject to search on the way in. Anything prohibited has to go back to your vehicle or in the trash, because items cannot be checked or left at the gate. The track's list includes:

• Food or beverage of any kind, alcohol included, apart from two sealed bottles of water
• Foam or hard-sided coolers, regardless of size
• Firearms, knives longer than 3 inches closed or 6 inches open, and multi-tools with a blade over 3 inches
• Glass or ceramic containers, dry ice, and fireworks
• Umbrellas, laser pointers, noisemakers and air horns
• Aerosol cans, except sunscreen, sunblock, hand sanitizer and bug spray
• Selfie sticks, tripods and monopods, drones
• Collapsible chairs, wagons, and seat cushions with metal components
• Frisbees, balloons, beach balls or anything else that can be thrown
• Skateboards, hoverboards and roller skates
• Displays of the Confederate flag, and obscene or indecent clothing

What You Can Bring

The permitted list is more generous than the cooler rule makes it sound:

• Two bags per person at 18" x 18" x 14" or smaller
• One empty soft-sided cooler at 14" x 14" x 14" or smaller
• Insulated cups up to 64 ounces
• Cameras, binoculars, scanners and headsets, worn around the neck or belt or carried in a bag
• iPads, tablets and laptops
• Seat cushions with no metal components
• Cigarettes and lighters, though smoking is limited to designated areas on the concourse
• Service animals
• Nationality flags on a pencil-sized wooden stick, as long as they do not block anyone's view

Grandstands, Seating and Track Layout

Iowa is a 0.875-mile D-shaped oval with progressive banking of 12 to 14 degrees in the corners, 10 degrees on the frontstretch and 4 degrees on the backstretch. It opened in September 2006 with Rusty Wallace involved in the design, which is why it reminds so many fans of a slightly smaller Richmond. The short lap means you can see the whole racetrack from almost any grandstand seat.

Every seat in the Iowa Speedway grandstands has a back, which is worth knowing before you spend money on a cushion. Bring one anyway if you want the padding, just make sure it has no metal in it. Everyone needs a grandstand ticket regardless of age.

Camping is a four-night stay opening Thursday, August 6. The tent campground sits outside the gates behind Turn 1 on 25-by-25-foot grass lots, walking distance from the grandstands, with no generators and no electric or water hookups. It was sold out for NASCAR weekend at the time of writing, with a waitlist on the track site.

Getting There and Race-Day Tips

All race traffic uses Interstate 80 to exit 168, then south on Iowa Speedway Drive, where staff will direct you to a lot. Rusty Wallace Drive is designated as an emergency route and is not open to general race traffic from that interchange. Use the same route on the way out.

General parking is free for grandstand customers. On Sunday, August 9, parking lots open at 8 a.m. and the grandstand ticket gates open at 9 a.m., with the Fan Zone open from 9 a.m. to the green flag. Driver introductions are at 1:50 p.m. local time and the green flag is 2:30 p.m. local, which is 3:30 p.m. ET.

Three things that will save you a headache. Iowa Speedway is completely cashless, so bring a card or a phone wallet. Re-entry is allowed, but your ticket has to be scanned by gate staff on the way out so it can be re-scanned when you return. And tickets run through the NASCAR Tracks App, so load them into your mobile wallet before you leave home.

For accessible parking, bring your state-issued placard, sticker or plate plus matching ID, and the person it was issued to has to be in the vehicle. ADA parking sits on the paved Midway near ticket booth 1, first come and first parked, so arrive early. All ADA grandstand seats are ground level. Fan Tips

Pack the empty soft cooler and a 64-ounce insulated cup, and treat the cooler as a way to keep what you buy inside cold rather than a way to bring lunch. Two sealed water bottles per person covers the only outside drink you are allowed.

Umbrellas are prohibited, so sun protection has to be something you wear. Aerosol sunscreen is explicitly permitted, and an August afternoon in aluminum grandstands gets hot. Bring a scanner or headset if you have one, or use the free scanner in the NASCAR Tracks App at the track.
