The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya sits in Montmelo, about a 30 minute train ride north of the city, and it has been on the Formula 1 calendar since it opened in 1991. In 2026 it hosts the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on June 12 to 14, with Madrid taking over the Spanish Grand Prix name later in the season. If you are headed to the Barcelona round, the single most important thing to sort out before you leave your hotel is your bag. This venue enforces a strict size limit and a long list of banned containers, so packing right is the difference between a smooth entry and a bin by the turnstile.

Bag Policy at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Start here, because bag policy is where most fans get caught out. The circuit allows bags and backpacks up to 15 litres of capacity, which is about the size of a small daypack or a school rucksack. Anything larger than 15 litres is turned away at the entrance. There is no clear-bag rule, so a normal opaque backpack is fine as long as it fits the size limit, but every bag is searched on the way in.

There are free water refill stations around the venue, so a refillable plastic bottle is a smart thing to pack for a hot June race.

What You Can Bring

Plenty is welcome once you clear the size and container rules. You can bring food and soft drinks within the bottle limits, a personal camera as long as it is not professional-grade kit, and a power bank to keep your phone alive through a long day. Flags, banners and team gear are encouraged, provided they are not offensive and do not block anyone else's view. In the open General Admission areas you are also allowed umbrellas and camping chairs. A refillable water bottle, sunscreen, a hat and a light layer for the evening round out a sensible race-day kit for the Catalan summer.

Grandstands, General Admission and the Layout

Grandstand ticket holders can sit in their assigned stand and also move freely through the General Admission areas. General Admission ticket holders can explore the open zones and grass banks but cannot enter any grandstand. The one rule that trips people up: umbrellas and camping chairs are allowed only in General Admission. They are not permitted in the grandstands because they block the view of the fans behind you.

On track the Barcelona circuit runs 4.657 km (2.894 miles) over 14 turns, and the Grand Prix is 66 laps. It is the layout most drivers know better than any other, since teams have tested here for years. The lap starts with a long main straight that feeds the heavy-braking Turn 1, opens into the fast right at Turn 3, then works through a flowing middle sector before a tighter, technical final run to the line. There are two DRS zones, and the layout rewards a car that is strong through long, loaded corners. From the main grandstands you get a clear view of the start, the run to Turn 1 and the pit lane.

Getting There

The easiest route from the city is the train. Take a train from Barcelona to Montmelo station, then either ride the shuttle bus to the gates or walk about 30 minutes to the circuit. If you drive, parking must be booked online in advance because there are no on-site sales, and a three-day pass ran about 49.50 euros in 2025.
