F1 Title Race: Antonelli Leads by 66 With Eight Races Left
A Happy Hour Racing Formula 1 feature. There is no Grand Prix this weekend, so we are looking at the whole run-in: the title math, the fights behind it, and the record waiting at the end of it.

Formula 1 is off this weekend before the Bahrain Grand Prix, which is being held in Malaysia on October 4. Kimi Antonelli leads the championship by 66 points over his own Mercedes teammate George Russell, with eight races and one sprint left to run. Russell just won a wild race in Baku by 0.196 seconds and still did not really dent the gap. If Antonelli finishes this off, he becomes the youngest world champion in the sport's history by more than three years.
Baku changed the mood, not the math
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the best argument all year that this title is not over. Russell put the Mercedes on pole by a big margin, led every lap, and then nearly threw it away on the last one when his car lost power under a yellow flag. Max Verstappen closed onto his gearbox and ran out of road. The gap at the line was 0.196 seconds, one of the closest finishes in Formula 1 history.
Antonelli had a genuinely bad weekend. He crashed at Turn 1 in qualifying, went out in the first segment, and started 16th. He still climbed to fifth. That is this season in one race: the leader has a scruffy day and the damage is eight points instead of thirty.

The only man who can catch him drives the same car
Russell is second in the standings on 236 points. Third-placed Lewis Hamilton is 103 points off the lead. In practical terms that means one driver can still win this championship, and he sits in the other side of the same garage.
That puts Mercedes in a spot it has not had to think about in years. The team is 160 points clear of Ferrari, so the bigger trophy is close to safe. The drivers' title is a family argument. Every strategy call and every set of fresh tyres now reads as a choice between two of their own, and the team has no reason to pick a side while both are winning races.

A top four with nothing to show for Baku
Red Bull had its best weekend of the year in Azerbaijan. Verstappen was second, Isack Hadjar was third on his return from injury, and it was the team's first double podium since April 2024. Red Bull is still winless in 2026. For a driver with four championships, going a full season without a victory would be the strangest line on his record.
McLaren had the opposite kind of day. Lando Norris, who won the 2025 title by two points over Verstappen, was collected in the crash when Franco Colapinto locked up and took out his own Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly. Oscar Piastri had run second early before a Turn 1 lock-up dropped him out of the points. Both McLarens left Baku empty-handed, and Colapinto picked up a ten-second penalty plus a grid drop for the next race.
Ferrari had the steadier afternoon, with Charles Leclerc fourth and Hamilton sixth. That is the shape of 2026: Mercedes wins, and everyone else takes turns having a bad day.
Next up is a race that technically is not happening where it says
The next race is the Bahrain Grand Prix, and it is being run at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on October 4. The round was originally set for Bahrain in April and was called off along with the Saudi Arabian round amid conflict in the Middle East. Under a deal between Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia, it was put back on the calendar at Sepang while Bahrain kept the ticket rights and the proceeds.
For fans the headline is simpler. Formula 1 has not raced at Sepang since the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix. It is wide, fast and hot, with two enormous straights and weather that can turn a dry race into a lottery in about four minutes. Nobody on the current grid has raced an F1 car there, which is the closest thing to a reset button the run-in could ask for.
The record waiting at the end
Antonelli turned 20 in August. If he wraps the championship up at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, which is the earliest he can mathematically do it, he will be 20 years, 2 months and 1 day old. Sebastian Vettel's record, set with Red Bull in 2010, is 23 years, 4 months and 11 days. That is not a record being nudged, it is one being moved by more than three years.
There is a second piece of history attached. Antonelli would be the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. He already holds the marks for youngest pole-sitter and youngest championship leader.
The fan debate
Here is the argument worth having between now and Sepang. If Russell wins the next two races and the gap comes down to about 30 points with five to go, does Mercedes pick a driver, or does it let two teammates race to Abu Dhabi and risk losing a title it has already earned on pace. Ferrari and McLaren have both been burned by that question. Mercedes is about to face it.
The Bottom Line
Russell just produced the drive of his career and took 66 points out of nobody. That is how far ahead this championship already is, and it is exactly why the last eight races are worth watching: the only way Antonelli loses now is if he or his own team hands it back.
