Mick Schumacher, Dennis Hauger and the IndyCar Rookie Race Decided by 15 Points

Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Race Preview. There is no IndyCar race this weekend, so this is a between-races feature on the fight that got lost while Alex Palou ran away with a fifth title.

The Short Version

Alex Palou won the 2026 IndyCar title by 86 points, so the championship stopped being a fight long before Laguna Seca. The real fight was 20 positions back. Dennis Hauger, Mick Schumacher and Caio Collet finished 22nd, 23rd and 24th in the standings, separated by 25 points total, and Rookie of the Year came down to the last race. Hauger won it by 15 points while sitting in a wrecked car.

The Rookie Award Came Down to 15 Points

Hauger finished the year with 228 points. Schumacher had 213. Collet had 203. Twenty-five points covered all three across 18 races, which in IndyCar terms is about one bad afternoon.

Going into the Laguna Seca finale, Schumacher needed to finish eighth or better to take the award. Then it fell apart in the least satisfying way possible. On the first lap, Sting Ray Robb was late on the brakes and drove into the back of Hauger's No. 19 Honda in Turn 6, spinning him through the dirt and hard into the tire barrier. His day was over before it began.

So he sat and hoped. Schumacher finished 22nd, nowhere near the eighth he needed, and Hauger became Rookie of the Year without completing a lap of the deciding race. His read on the crash was blunt. "I think the guy behind me, I don't know, closed his eyes for a minute there and went right into the back of me," he said.

Dennis Hauger Is What the Ladder Is Supposed to Produce

Hauger is 23, from Oslo, and the first Norwegian to race IndyCar in 109 years. He did not arrive as a curiosity. He arrived as a champion at every level: the Italian F4 title in 2019 with 12 wins, the FIA Formula 3 championship in 2021 with two races to spare, then three seasons and three wins in Formula 2. He came to America for Indy NXT in 2025 and dominated it with six wins and 599 points.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Hauger is the second straight Indy NXT champion to turn around and win IndyCar Rookie of the Year. Louis Foster won Indy NXT in 2024 and took the IndyCar rookie award in 2025. Two years running, the series' own feeder championship has produced the best rookie in the big cars, which is exactly what a ladder is for.

His 2026 with Dale Coyne Racing had no wins, no podiums and no poles, and that is not the point. He qualified third at St. Petersburg in his first IndyCar weekend. He made the Firestone Fast Six twice. He finished eighth on the Indianapolis road course after starting 24th. In a car that was never going to win, he kept turning up where it did not belong.

Mick Schumacher Found Something Nobody Expected

Everybody assumed the same thing about Mick Schumacher. Former Formula 1 driver, famous last name, raised on road courses and street circuits, so he would be fine on the twisty stuff and lost on the ovals. He had never turned a lap on an oval in his life.

The opposite happened. Ovals became the best part of his season. Schumacher was the only Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver to complete all six oval races in 2026 and was the team's strongest oval performer. His season-best finish, eighth, came at Nashville Superspeedway, where he briefly set the fastest lap while running with two-time oval winner Scott McLaughlin. He qualified fourth at Phoenix and fourth again for the second Milwaukee race.

He was not satisfied with eighth, which tells you where his head was. "In terms of pace, we were definitely supposed to be higher," he said at Nashville. "I think the car was so good that I think we could have really been higher up than that."

Then there was May. Schumacher made his Indianapolis 500 debut, ran the full 200 laps without putting a wheel wrong, and won Indy 500 Rookie of the Year. For a driver whose Formula 1 career ended with people questioning whether he belonged, finishing the 500 clean on the first try was the most useful answer available.

Where All Three Land in 2027

The market moved fast on this group, which tells you how the paddock rated the season.

Schumacher is going to Meyer Shank Racing. The team announced it on September 4, and he will drive the No. 66 Honda alongside Marcus Armstrong in the No. 60. Co-owner Mike Shank did not hide why. "He really impressed us in his first season of INDYCAR," Shank said. "We see a lot of potential in him." Schumacher called MSR "such an ambitious team."

Hauger got the bigger jump. On September 16 he signed a multi-year deal with AJ Foyt Racing to drive the No. 14 Chevrolet from 2027, taking the seat Santino Ferrucci held for four years. That is the reigning Rookie of the Year moving out of a small Honda team and into one of the most famous numbers in American racing.

Collet is the odd man out at his own team. The Brazilian ran Foyt's No. 4 Chevrolet all season and lost the award by 25 points, which is not a fair description of his year. His pace and his funding make him a candidate for the seats still open, but nothing is signed.

The Fan Debate

IndyCar has not had an American champion since Josef Newgarden in 2019, and the driver who came closest in 2026 was Kyle Kirkwood, an American, who still lost by 86 points. Meanwhile the best rookie class in years is a Norwegian, a German and a Brazilian.

So which is it. Is IndyCar healthier because the best young talent in the world now treats it as a destination instead of a fallback, or is it a problem that none of the next great drivers grew up watching it on a Sunday afternoon in Indiana?

The Bottom Line

Palou's fifth title in six years is the line that goes in the record book, but the most competitive fight of 2026 was three rookies in slow cars scrapping over 25 points. Two of them had better rides before the offseason was a month old. When the green flag drops at St. Petersburg on March 7, this is the group most likely to change what the front of the field looks like.
