The Short Version

  • Cooler: one soft-sided cooler per person, up to 14 by 14 by 14 inches. No hard or foam coolers of any size.
  • Bags: one backpack per person up to 18 by 18 by 14 inches, or a small clutch or fanny pack up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. This is not a clear-bag-only track.
  • Food and drink: pre-packaged sealed food and drinks, including alcohol, are welcome. No glass.
  • Leave home: hard coolers, umbrellas, glass, folding chairs, selfie sticks and drones.

Darlington Raceway Cooler Policy

Here is the number one thing fans search before a Darlington race, so we will lead with it. You can bring one soft-sided cooler per person, and it can measure up to 14 by 14 by 14 inches. Fill it with your own food and drinks and you are set for a long afternoon at the 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval.

What does not get in is just as important. Hard-sided coolers and foam coolers are prohibited no matter the size, and so are thermos bottles and dry ice. Every cooler is subject to inspection at the gate, so pack it in a way you do not mind a security team looking through. Glass is a hard no, so pour anything glass-bottled into a can or a plastic or aluminum bottle before you leave the campground.

Darlington Raceway Bag Policy

Good news for anyone who hates the clear-bag rule at other venues. Darlington is not clear-bag-only. You can carry one backpack per person up to 18 by 18 by 14 inches, or a small clutch or fanny pack up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Sealed, pre-packaged food and drinks can ride in a clear bag or in that soft cooler, alcohol included, as long as nothing is glass.

Bags, like coolers, are searched on the way in, so keep it simple and keep the line moving. Anything larger than the sizes above will be turned away at the gate, and there is no bag check, so a too-big bag means a walk back to the car.

Prohibited Items at Darlington Raceway

Darlington keeps a long list of items that are not allowed through the grandstand gates. Leave these at home or in the car:

  • Hard-sided or foam coolers of any size, thermos bottles and dry ice
  • Any firearm, plus knives and multi-tools with a blade, and fireworks
  • Glass or ceramic containers of any kind
  • Umbrellas
  • Folding or collapsible chairs, and seat cushions with metal parts
  • Selfie sticks, tripods and monopods
  • Drones, laser pointers, air horns and other noise makers
  • Beach balls, frisbees, balloons and anything else you would throw
  • Aerosol cans other than sunscreen, hand sanitizer and bug spray
  • Skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates and bicycles
  • Non-licensed motorized vehicles such as golf carts, scooters, ATVs, e-bikes and Segways
  • Pets, other than service animals, inside the grandstands

What You Can Bring to Darlington Raceway

Plenty gets the green flag. Along with your soft cooler and backpack, you can carry in sunscreen, hand sanitizer and bug spray in aerosol, gel or liquid form, plus ice and insulated cups up to 64 ounces. Cameras are welcome as long as the lens is 6 inches or shorter and does not detach. Binoculars, a race scanner and headsets are all allowed, and so are tablets and laptops.

Families can bring a collapsible umbrella stroller, and seat cushions are fine as long as they have no metal frame. Service animals are welcome throughout. If you are the type who tracks every lap, bring the scanner and a portable charger and you will be dialed in all day.

Grandstands, Seating and Track Layout

Darlington is a one-of-a-kind shape. The egg-shaped oval is tighter in turns 1 and 2 than in turns 3 and 4, which is exactly why drivers ride the wall and leave with the famous Darlington Stripe down the right side of the car. The start-finish line sits in front of Tyler Tower at Section M and in the Wallace Grandstand at Section J.

Every fan of every age needs a grandstand ticket, so plan a seat for the kids too. Sitting up high gives you the full sweep of the egg; sitting low in the Brasington or Pearson towers puts you close to the corners where the racing gets wild.

Getting There and Race-Day Tips

Darlington Raceway sits in Darlington, South Carolina, in the Pee Dee region of the state. Daily event parking for cars and motorcycles is free, with upgraded lots such as Pole Position available for a fee if you want to be close. Camping is part of the Darlington experience too, with RV and tent options, and dogs and cats are welcome in the campgrounds even though they are not allowed in the grandstands.

Plan to pay with plastic once you are there. Darlington takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, and no cash or personal checks are accepted during race week, so leave the cash at home and bring a card. Guest Services can be reached at 866-459-7223, and phone lines run 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily if you need to sort out tickets or questions before you go.

Fan Tips for Darlington

This is a hot-weather track for both the spring Goodyear 400 and the Labor Day weekend Southern 500, so sunscreen and a hat do more for your day than almost anything else. Umbrellas are not allowed, so shade planning matters. Bring your soft cooler stocked, wear ear protection, and give yourself extra time at the gate because every bag and cooler gets checked. While you are on property, the on-site Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum and NMPA Hall of Fame is a genuine bucket-list stop for any race fan.
