Esteban Ocon Exit: Haas Boss Komatsu Speaks at Interlagos
Happy Hour Racing covers Formula 1 every race weekend. Ayao Komatsu has now faced reporters about Esteban Ocon and Haas in Brazil, and he added new detail while still holding back the one answer everybody wants.
The Short Version
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu spoke about Esteban Ocon at Interlagos ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, his first comments in person since Haas ended Ocon's season. He still would not say what happened in Mexico City. He did describe how he told the team, why he thinks the call was the right one, and how Rafael Camara got the seat. Haas still has not named a driver for the last three races, and Camara says that talk comes after this weekend.
What Komatsu Said About Esteban Ocon
The headline is what he would not say. Komatsu again declined to give details, and the PA report carried by ESPN says he pointed to an ongoing process as the reason. Nobody has explained what that process is, so we are not going to guess.
What he did offer was his reasoning. Komatsu said his job as team principal is to ask what is best for the team, and that the question gave him clarity in Mexico. "I have to make a decision purely based on professionalism," he told reporters, per ESPN. He said it was not easy, but that he is at peace with the call. He also said he never went looking for a situation like this one, and that close to two years of working with Ocon taught him a lot.
That lines up with what he said after the Mexico City race, when he took full responsibility for the benching. The difference is that the call now covers the rest of the year, and he is standing behind it after a week to think about it.
The Moment He Told the Haas Crew
This is the new part fans have not heard before. Komatsu described the Saturday morning in Mexico City when he told the team that Ocon was out of the car. He said people were surprised and that he could not explain why, even to his own staff. He said he normally tries to be as open as he can with them, but this time he could not be.
So he asked for one thing: give Ryo Hirakawa everything. Komatsu said the crew did exactly that. Hirakawa stepped in with almost no warning and was classified 10th, one point on his F1 debut. Komatsu said the team earned that point and is in good spirits now. It is worth remembering how odd that weekend was for the mechanics and engineers. They got a new driver and no explanation, and they still scored.
Why Rafael Camara Got the Seat at Haas
You might figure this one was simple, since Haas already signed Camara for 2027. Komatsu says it was not. He told reporters it may look easy from the outside but it was not, and GPblog and Nextgen-Auto both report that Hirakawa was considered for Brazil.
Komatsu said what sold him was how Camara carried himself more than any lap time. He praised how Camara handled pressure and called his approach mature. GPblog ties those comments to Camara's test at Portimao. Komatsu also said he talked to Camara on Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday after Mexico, and that those talks convinced him Camara could handle it.
Camara spoke for himself in Thursday's FIA press conference. He said he was already in Brazil when he got the news. Asked if he would finish the F1 season, he said that will be discussed after this weekend. Asked if he would give up a shot at the Formula 2 title to stay in F1, he said that still needs to be talked through. So even the driver does not know yet.
What Is Confirmed and What Is Just Reported
Confirmed: Haas pulled Ocon before Saturday running in Mexico City. On November 3, Haas said he will not race for the team again in 2026 and named Camara for Brazil. Ocon has said there was a disagreement and has flatly denied any physical violence.
Reported, not confirmed: L'Equipe reported that a meeting between Ocon and Komatsu may have turned physical. Germany's Bild went further and claimed Ocon grabbed Komatsu by the shoulder as Komatsu tried to leave his office. Ocon denies any violence, and Haas has not confirmed either report. Treat them as claims, not facts.
The contract: Some outlets now say Ocon was sacked or terminated, and Bild reported that talks on ending his deal were coming. Haas has only spoken about his race seat this season. We have not seen the team say anything about the contract itself.
What to Watch Next for Haas
The Haas seat is the next real news. After Sao Paulo come Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, and only Brazil has a named driver. Brazilian outlet Grande Premio says Camara is expected in Las Vegas, with Hirakawa expected back for the final two rounds. That is a report, and Haas has not announced it.
The stakes are real, too. Oliver Bearman told reporters his mindset has not changed and that the target for the rest of the year is beating Audi. PlanetF1 puts Haas four points ahead of Audi in the constructors' standings, so every point from that second car matters.
As for Ocon, we did not find a new statement from him as of this writing. His only public comment on the row is still the one we covered from Mexico City. He has no confirmed seat for 2027.
The Bottom Line
Komatsu told us how the decision felt and how he made it, but not what caused it. Until Haas or Ocon says more, the biggest question in this story stays open.
