The Short Version

The NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race runs Sunday, November 8 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, 267 laps and 400.5 miles starting at 3:00 PM ET on NBC. Kyle Larson carries a 67-point lead over Christopher Bell and a 70-point lead over Denny Hamlin into the final race of the 2026 season. Because the most anyone can score in one race is 76 points, Larson only has to bank nine points to be champion. Homestead is a worn, wide, multi-groove 1.5-mile oval that rewards tire management, which happens to be the thing Larson does best.

My Pick to Win

Kyle Larson - No. 5, Hendrick Motorsports

He has won two of his last five Cup starts at Homestead and has led laps in 10 of his 12 career starts here.

The Track: Why Homestead Races the Way It Does

Homestead-Miami Speedway is a 1.5-mile oval with variable banking that climbs from 18 degrees at the bottom of the corner to 20 degrees at the top. That sounds like a small difference. On track it is everything. Because the banking gets steeper the higher you go, a driver who runs the outside lane can carry more speed, and the asphalt up by the wall has been sanded smooth by years of traffic. Cars end up running three and four lanes wide, and the fastest line moves around during a run.

The surface is old and abrasive, so tires give up. Long green-flag runs at Homestead usually see lap times fall off by a full second or more, and the car that was fastest on lap five is often not the car that is fastest on lap thirty. That is why Homestead produces real passing instead of a single-file parade.

One more detail that matters for Sunday: Homestead is not on NASCAR's 750-horsepower list for 2026. That package went to 17 tracks under 1.5 miles plus the road courses. Homestead stays on the 670-horsepower intermediate setup with the taller 4-inch rear spoiler, so the cars will have more downforce and more grip than they had at Martinsville last week.

Past Winners and a Record Book Worth Reading

Homestead was the sport's title-deciding finale every year from 2002 through 2019 before the championship moved to Phoenix. Sunday brings it back for the first time in seven seasons, and the winners list here reads like a list of people who are very good at saving tires.

Greg Biffle, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart share the track record with three Cup wins each. Biffle's three came back to back to back from 2004 through 2006, still the only streak like it here. Stewart won the first two Cup races held on the reconfigured oval in 1999 and 2000. Among drivers in Sunday's field, Hamlin is the only one with three.

Here is what the record actually says about our pick. Larson's last five Cup starts at Homestead:

Year Start Finish Laps Led
2025 14 1 19
2024 2 13 1
2023 5 34 96
2022 5 1 199
2021 17 4 5

Two wins, three top-fives, and the one bad number in the column is a 2023 crash on pit road after he had already led 96 laps. Across his full career here he owns a 12.0 average finish in 12 starts. Anyone searching Kyle Larson odds at Homestead in 2026 is looking at the strongest active record at the track.

Drivers to Watch, By the Numbers

Remember that 2026 scrapped the elimination bracket. There is no Championship 4 and nobody got knocked out along the way. The Chase is a straight points race over the final 10 events, and these are the standings that matter after William Byron won last week at Martinsville:

Larson 2,469. Bell 2,402. Hamlin 2,399. Chase Briscoe 2,385. Joey Logano 2,366. Only Bell and Hamlin are still alive mathematically, and both need a near-perfect day plus a disaster for the No. 5.

My Pick to Win

Happy Hour Racing Track Type Report Card showing Kyle Larson's 2026 average finish by track type, including a 14.2 average and a P6 median on intermediate tracks

The pick is Kyle Larson, and the report card above is why. On intermediate tracks in 2026 his average finish reads 14.2, which looks ordinary until you see the median sitting at sixth. Half of his 14 intermediate runs this year finished sixth or better. The average is dragged down by three wrecks at Texas, Chicagoland and Indianapolis, not by speed. Take those out and he is a top-six car on this kind of track almost every week, with both of his intermediate wins coming at Kansas, a track built on the same wide, worn, multi-groove idea as Homestead.

The clinch math also frees him up. Maximum points in a 2026 race is 76: 55 for the win, 10 for each of the two stage wins, and one for the fastest lap. Larson leads Bell by 67, so he needs nine points to be safe, which is a 28th-place finish or nine stage points. He also holds the tiebreaker on wins. A driver who does not have to gamble on strategy is a dangerous driver at a track where saving tires wins races. This is a prediction, not a promise, and Homestead has ended more than one sure thing. But if you are hunting Championship Race predictions or NASCAR DFS picks for Sunday, the No. 5 is the straightforward answer.

Who Else Could Win?

Christopher Bell. He won here in 2023 and he is the only driver within 67 points. He has to outscore Larson by 68, which realistically means winning both stages and the race while Larson finishes outside the top 28.

Denny Hamlin. Three Cup wins at Homestead ties the all-time track record, and nobody in the field reads this surface better. He sits 70 back, so his title path is even narrower than Bell's, but his win odds here are legitimate.

Tyler Reddick. He won this race in 2024 and has nothing to lose on Sunday. Among NASCAR picks at Homestead that are not named Larson, he is the one that keeps showing up in the data.

The Bottom Line

Homestead gets its championship back after seven years away, and it gets one worth watching: a 67-point lead, a track that chews tires, and a driver who has led laps in 10 of his 12 trips here. Kyle Larson needs nine points. Christopher Bell needs a miracle. Sunday tells us which one Homestead is handing out.
