Esteban Ocon Out at Haas, Rafael Camara Debuts in Brazil

Happy Hour Racing covers Formula 1 every race weekend. The Esteban Ocon and Haas story just got its biggest update yet, and it landed days before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The Short Version

On Tuesday, November 3, Haas confirmed Esteban Ocon will not race for the team again in 2026. Rafael Camara, the 21-year-old Formula 2 points leader, takes the seat for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend and makes his F1 debut at his home race. Haas still has not said why Ocon was pulled from the car in Mexico City. It also has not named a driver for the last three races, so this story is not over.

What Haas Confirmed About Esteban Ocon

Team principal Ayao Komatsu said the team told Ocon he "will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season." That is the news. On Sunday, Komatsu had described the benching as a call for the Mexico City weekend only. Two days later it became the rest of the year.

Komatsu said a decision like this is not made easily and that the team believes it is the right one going forward. He also said the talks between Haas and Ocon will stay private. So do not expect the team to fill in the blanks any time soon.

Here is the official word from the team:

Quick Catch-Up on the Mexico City Mess

If you missed it, here is how we got here. In second practice on Friday, October 30, Ocon argued over the radio with his race engineer, Laura Mueller, about his tires and run plan. On Saturday morning, Haas pulled him from the car and put reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa in for the rest of the weekend. Hirakawa finished 13th on the road and got moved up to 10th after penalties to other drivers, scoring a point on his debut.

French newspaper L'Equipe reported that a meeting between Ocon and Komatsu may have turned physical. That is a report, not a confirmed fact. Ocon admitted there was a disagreement but flatly denied any physical violence. Haas has never given its reason. We covered all of it in why Haas benched Esteban Ocon and Komatsu taking full responsibility.

Who Is Rafael Camara?

Haas had already signed Camara for 2027, so fans knew the name. They just did not expect to see him this soon. He has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2021. He won the Formula Regional European title in 2024 and the Formula 3 title in 2025. Now he leads the Formula 2 standings.

He also has some time with this team. In August he tested the Haas VF-25 at Portimao, and Komatsu pointed to that test as the reason Haas trusts him here. Still, a test in an old car is not a Grand Prix weekend at Interlagos with the whole country watching. Formula 1 says he will be the 34th driver from Brazil to race in the series.

Why not Hirakawa, who just scored a point? He is not available. He is racing the World Endurance Championship finale at Monza this weekend.

What Is Still Unknown at Haas

This is where we separate facts from reports, because plenty is still open.

The last three races. Haas has only named Camara for Brazil. Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi are not settled. Brazilian outlet Grande Premio says Camara is expected to race in Las Vegas. Formula 2 runs alongside F1 in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, and Camara is fighting for that title. Crash.net says Hirakawa is likely back for those two rounds, while PlanetF1 says Camara could skip F2 and stay with Haas. None of that is official.

Ocon's contract. Some outlets are using words like "terminated." The Haas statement does not go that far. It covers his race seat for the rest of this season. We do not know where his contract stands.

The reason. Haas has not said, and Komatsu says the talks stay private.

What This Means for Esteban Ocon

Ocon had already announced he would leave Haas at the end of 2026. He does not have a confirmed seat for 2027. Back in October, he told reporters not to write him off and said he still wants to be racing in F1, with a reserve job as his fallback. Missing the final five races of a contract year does not help that case.

We did not find a new statement from Ocon on this announcement as of publishing. His last word was the denial he posted during the Mexico City weekend.

What to Watch at Interlagos

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend runs November 6 to 8. Camara gets a home crowd, a car he has never raced, and Ollie Bearman as his measuring stick. Do not judge him on one weekend. But the whole paddock will be watching, because he is the guy Haas has picked for its future. If he runs close to Bearman, the team gets to feel good about a very messy week.

The Bottom Line

Esteban Ocon's Haas career is over with races still left to run, and nobody at the team will say why. The only thing we know for sure is that Rafael Camara gets the seat early, in front of his own fans, this Sunday.
