Felix Rosenqvist: The Closest Indy 500 Finish in History
Felix Rosenqvist: The Closest Indy 500 Finish in History
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Driver Spotlight - where we pull one driver into the garage, look at the career behind the helmet, and tell you what makes them tick. This week: the number 60.
The Short Version
Felix Rosenqvist is the Swede who won the 2026 Indianapolis 500 by 0.0233 of a second, the closest finish in the 110 runnings of the race. He has 131 IndyCar starts, two wins, eight poles and 58 top-10 finishes, and he was the 2019 series Rookie of the Year. He was also a Formula 3 phenomenon and a Formula E race winner before he ever turned a lap at Indianapolis. He won the biggest race in the world three weeks after becoming a father.
From Varnamo to the Fastest Junior Resume in Europe
Rosenqvist was born on November 7, 1991, in Varnamo, a small town in southern Sweden. He came up the European single-seater ladder the slow way, and he stayed in Formula 3 long enough to own it. In 2015 he won the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with 13 victories, a season that stands as one of the most dominant in the category's history.
The street race at Macau is the one junior drivers actually want on the resume, because there is no runoff and no second chance. Rosenqvist won it in 2014, then won it again in 2015, beating a young Charles Leclerc to do it. Back-to-back Macau wins put him in a very short list of drivers.
There was no Formula 1 seat waiting for him. So he went to Formula E with Mahindra instead, and in 2017 he won at Berlin for the first victory in the team's history. He scored three Formula E wins in total before an American phone call changed the direction of his career.
Ganassi, Rookie of the Year, and the Long Middle
Chip Ganassi Racing put him in the No. 10 Honda for 2019 alongside Scott Dixon. He finished sixth in the championship as a rookie and took Rookie of the Year by five points over Colton Herta, the first Ganassi driver to win that award since Juan Pablo Montoya in 1999.
His first IndyCar win came the next year at Road America in the second race of the 2020 doubleheader. Then came the hard part. He moved to Arrow McLaren SP for 2021 and had a stuck throttle at Detroit that put him into the wall hard enough to send him to the hospital overnight. He was released the next day, but he missed races and the season never recovered. Three more years passed without a win. He joined Meyer Shank Racing for 2024 and gave the team its first IndyCar pole at Long Beach. In 2025 he climbed back to sixth in points. The win column still said one.
May 24, 2026: Half a Car Length
Rosenqvist qualified fourth for the 110th Indianapolis 500 and ran an off-sequence fuel strategy that put him in front for the first time on lap 154 of 200. The race was already a record book rewrite before the finish, with 70 lead changes, more than any Indy 500 ever run.
Two late cautions turned it into a one-lap shootout. David Malukas led the field to the white flag in the No. 12 Penske, Marcus Armstrong was second, Rosenqvist was third. Rosenqvist cleared his own teammate, then carried a run off turn four and dragged the No. 60 alongside Malukas down the front straight. He got to the yard of bricks first by 0.0233 of a second, roughly half a car length.
That erased the mark everyone assumed was permanent. Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043 of a second in 1992, and that record had stood for 34 years. Rosenqvist cut it nearly in half. It was his first Indy 500 and only the second IndyCar win in Meyer Shank Racing history, after Helio Castroneves won the same race in 2021.

By the Numbers
Here is the career to date. Every figure below is an IndyCar total through the end of the 2026 season.
Off the Track
Rosenqvist is 34 and lives in Carmel, Indiana, about 20 minutes up the road from the Speedway. He and his wife welcomed their first child, a daughter named Stella, on May 4, 2026. That is 20 days before he won the Indianapolis 500, and the photo that went around afterward was Stella in a miniature winner's wreath to match his.
Paddock people tend to describe him as almost too polite for the job, which is a strange thing to say about somebody who just won a 230 mph drag race to the yard of bricks. He has also never stopped being a sports car driver when the chance comes up, and he keeps a strong following back in Sweden, where open-wheel success is rare enough to be a national story.
Where He Stands Now
The 2026 season ended with Rosenqvist ninth in the championship on 412 points from 18 starts, with the Indy 500 win, two poles, five top fives and 168 laps led. It was comfortably the best full season of his IndyCar career.
It is also his last with Meyer Shank. Arrow McLaren signed him for 2027, where he will drive the No. 7 Chevrolet alongside Pato O'Ward and Scott Dixon. That is a return trip, since Arrow McLaren is the team he left in 2023, and it reunites him with Dixon, who was his teammate in his rookie year. On paper it is the strongest equipment he has ever had.
The Bottom Line
Felix Rosenqvist spent seven seasons being the guy who was always quick and almost never in victory lane. Then he won the biggest race on the planet by the smallest margin it has ever been won by, with a three-week-old daughter at home. Now he goes to the best car of his career. The man waited a long time for one afternoon, and that afternoon ended up in the record book.
