Indy Road Course by the Numbers: IndyCar's 2027 Month of May Opener
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Track Preview - the numbers, the records, and the data behind every race. The 2026 season is over, so this week is a between-races feature on the track that opens the Month of May in 2027.
The Short Version
IndyCar does not race again until March 7, 2027, so this is a between-races data feature rather than a preview. The subject is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, which hosts the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday, May 15, 2027 as race six of the season and the first green flag of the Month of May. It is 2.439 miles and 14 turns, it runs the famous frontstretch in the opposite direction from the Indianapolis 500, and it has quietly become the one road course on the calendar where starting up front does not settle anything.
The Number That Matters
2 of the last 5 winners started on pole
One of the other three won from 14th in the rain. This is not Barber.
The Track: 2.439 Miles, 14 Turns, and a Record Nobody Can Touch
INDYCAR lists the road course at 2.439 miles with 14 turns. It borrows the oval's frontstraight and Turns 1 and 2, then dives into the infield for the rest of the lap, and it runs clockwise, which is the opposite direction from the way the Indianapolis 500 goes around the same frontstretch. The race is 85 laps, or 207.32 miles.
What makes it race well is the shape of the braking zones. The run down to Turn 1 is long and the corner is slow and wide, and the infield has two more heavy stops that reward a driver who times the exit right. Drivers get 200 seconds of push-to-pass with a 20-second cap on any single activation, which is the series maximum, and on a road course they can stack it on top of the hybrid energy boost. For 2026 INDYCAR also removed the old lockout that kept the button unavailable after cautions, so push-to-pass is live the moment the field crosses the line on a restart. Firestone brings a primary and a softer alternate compound, and a dry race requires a driver to run both.
The qualifying record here is the most stubborn number in the whole file. Will Power put a Team Penske Chevrolet around the layout in 1:07.7044, an average of 129.687 mph, in 2017, back when the manufacturers still built their own aerokits. Nine seasons and three rule packages later, the closest anybody has come is Felix Rosenqvist's 1:08.2785 in 2019, and that is still more than half a second away. Alex Palou's 2024 pole of 1:09.0004 is the quickest lap of the current car.
The Record Book: Three Drivers Tied at Three
IndyCar has run 18 races on this road course since 2014, counting the summer dates the series added from 2020 through 2023 and the 2020 Harvest doubleheader. Will Power has won five of them, more than anybody, and he owns the lap record on top of it. In the May race alone, Power, Simon Pagenaud and Alex Palou are tied at three wins each. Nobody has ever won four.
Here is the part that separates this track from the rest of the road course schedule. Pole position has been worth a win twice in five years.
| Year | Pole Sitter | Winner | Winner Started |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Will Power | Colton Herta | 14th |
| 2023 | Christian Lundgaard | Alex Palou | 3rd |
| 2024 | Alex Palou | Alex Palou | 1st |
| 2025 | Alex Palou | Alex Palou | 1st |
| 2026 | Alex Palou | Christian Lundgaard | 4th |
The 2022 race is the outlier that proves the point. Rain turned it into a two-hour timed race and Colton Herta came from 14th on the grid to lead 50 of the 75 laps, with Simon Pagenaud finishing second after starting 20th. On a track where the field cannot pass, that does not happen.
Just 85 laps stand between them and the checkered flag. Sonsio Grand Prix - 4:30 PM ET on FOX

What Happened Here in 2026
Palou qualified on pole for the third straight year and led 23 laps, and he finished fifth. Christian Lundgaard started fourth, led 20 laps, took the lead for good on lap 68 and won by 4.6713 seconds in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. It was his second career IndyCar win and his first in 47 races, going back to Toronto in 2023. David Malukas led the most laps of anybody with 27 and finished second for Team Penske, and Graham Rahal was third without leading a lap.
Three different drivers led 70 of the 85 laps, and the one who led the most of them finished second. That is the Indy road course working the way it is supposed to.
Where It Sits on the 2027 Calendar
INDYCAR released Phase One of the 2027 schedule in August 2026. St. Petersburg opens on March 7, Phoenix follows on March 13 and the Streets of Arlington run on March 21. Barber is April 4, Long Beach is April 18, and then the Indianapolis road course on Saturday, May 15, the 111th Indianapolis 500 on May 30 and Detroit on June 6. Every race is on FOX.
That May 15 slot is worth circling. It is a two-week runway to the 500 rather than the one-week sprint, which means teams get a full read on the road course before the oval swallows the rest of the month. For a fan it is the cheapest ticket of the Month of May and the first time all year the place is full.
Who to Watch When IndyCar Comes Back
Alex Palou closed 2026 with his fifth championship in six seasons and his fourth in a row, 631 points and a title clinched with a race to spare. That puts him third on the all-time list behind A.J. Foyt with seven and his own teammate Scott Dixon with six. He has three wins and three straight poles at this track.
Christian Lundgaard is the defending winner here and took pole at this track in 2023 as well. He finished 2026 third in the standings on 535 points with two wins, this one and Road America.
Will Power still holds the most wins on the layout at five and the qualifying record from 2017. He is the only driver who can make it four in the May race.
David Malukas led more laps than the winner here in 2026 and finished fifth in the championship on 514 points in his first year with Team Penske. He was also the 2026 oval champion and lost the closest Indy 500 photo finish in history to Felix Rosenqvist.
The Bottom Line
Every other road course on the IndyCar schedule tells you who wins on Saturday afternoon. This one does not. Three of the last five winners here started outside the front row, the pole sitter finished fifth in 2026, and the fastest qualifying lap anyone has ever run at the place is nine years old. Saturday, May 15 is a long way off, but that is the stat to file away.
