Gateway is 1.25 miles of asphalt and it is not a normal oval. It is egg-shaped. Turns 1 and 2 have 11 degrees of banking and a tighter radius. Turns 3 and 4 have only 9 degrees and open up wider. That means one end of the lap drives like New Hampshire and the other end drives like Phoenix. A crew chief cannot build a car that is perfect at both ends. They pick one, live with the other, and the driver makes up the difference.
The other big change for 2026 is the package. Gateway used to run NASCAR's intermediate aero kit. This year it runs the short-track package instead, with the smaller 3-inch spoiler and the simplified diffuser, and the engines make 750 horsepower instead of 670. More power, less grip. The cars slide more off the corner and the driver has to manage the throttle. That should make passing easier than it has been here, and it should punish anyone who overdrives the tight end of the track.

The Cup Series has only been coming here since 2022, so the history is short but it is clear. Joey Logano won the first one in 2022 from seventh. Kyle Busch put the No. 8 on the pole in 2023 and led a race-high 107 laps. Austin Cindric started second and inherited the 2024 win when Ryan Blaney ran out of fuel while leading. Denny Hamlin won from the pole last September and led 75 laps.

Hamlin comes in leading the Chase standings with 2,135 points, twelve clear of Christopher Bell and sixteen ahead of Ryan Blaney. Bell has four Gateway starts and an 8.5 average finish but still no top five here. Blaney has led 120 laps at this track and has two fourth-place finishes, and he is the guy who was leading in 2024 when the fuel ran dry. Joey Logano has never finished outside the top five at Gateway. Any of those four can win it.
He returns to @WWTRaceway as defending winner and points leader. Another victory would be huge for @dennyhamlin's championship chances.
