Palou's 2026 season was six wins, eight poles, seven podiums, 12 top-five finishes and 15 top-tens across 18 races, with more than 670 laps led. The win total is the headline, but the poles are the number that really explains the year. Eight of them, including a stretch of five in a row that made him only the fifth driver in series history to start P1 five straight times.
Starting up front is how you lead 670 laps, and leading laps is how you bank points on days the win is not there. That is the boring, unglamorous engine underneath the dominance. Palou did not have to win every week because he was almost never out of position.
The record context matters too. Four consecutive championships ties the mark Sebastien Bourdais set from 2004 through 2007. Five total titles makes Palou the youngest five-time champion in American open-wheel history. And the team side of it is just as big: this was the 18th championship won by a Chip Ganassi Racing driver, moving the organization one clear of Team Penske's 17.
Eighteen races, eight winners
Here is the part that pushes back on the idea that 2026 was a runaway. Palou won six races. The other 12 went to seven different drivers, and three of those drivers won more than once.
Pato O'Ward was the second-winningest driver of the year with three, and he got them in a cluster: Mid-Ohio in July, then a sweep of both Milwaukee races in late August. Josef Newgarden took Phoenix and Gateway, the two ovals that suit him. Christian Lundgaard won both road courses at Indianapolis and Road America. Kyle Kirkwood won on the streets of Arlington and again in Washington, D.C.
Felix Rosenqvist won the biggest one. He took the Indianapolis 500 in May for Meyer Shank Racing, which was the single most valuable result of anyone's season outside the championship fight. Marcus Ericsson won at Markham, and Scott McLaughlin closed the year out by winning the finale at Laguna Seca from pole.
The real fight was for second
The championship was settled at Milwaukee. The runner-up spot was not settled until the last handful of laps of the last race of the year.
Kyle Kirkwood finished second with 545 points. Christian Lundgaard finished third with 535. Ten points apart after 18 races. Kirkwood locked it down with a podium at Laguna Seca, which is exactly the kind of result that decides these things. Behind them, Pato O'Ward took fourth on 522 and David Malukas was fifth on 514, which was a career year for Malukas in his first season at Team Penske.

What the numbers say about 2027
Two things stand out. First, the gap at the top is not a talent gap anymore, it is a consistency gap. Kirkwood, Lundgaard and O'Ward all won races and all finished within 25 points of each other. Any of the three who finds four or five more clean weekends is in the title fight next year.
Second, Palou's poles number is the one to watch. If that drops back toward three or four, the championship math gets a lot tighter in a hurry, because the laps led and the points banked on off days go with it. Qualifying pace has been the quiet foundation of this whole run.
