SVG Conquers the Viva Mexico 250!
The inaugural NASCAR Cup Series points-paying race in Mexico City, the Viva Mexico 250, saw Shane van Gisbergen deliver a masterclass in road course racing. The New Zealander, in his first full-time Cup Series season, proved why he's a force to be reckoned with on circuits with left and right turns. Van Gisbergen, driving the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, claimed pole position and led a commanding 60 of the 100 laps, including the final 32. His winning margin of 16.567 seconds over second-place Christopher Bell was the largest in the Cup Series since 2009 – a truly dominant performance that punched his ticket into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs!
Christopher Bell, starting from 31st, showcased incredible resilience to climb through the field and secure a strong second-place finish for Joe Gibbs Racing. Chase Elliott, in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, rounded out the podium, further demonstrating his road course prowess. The top five was completed by Alex Bowman and Michael McDowell, highlighting the strong showing from various teams.
The race wasn't without its early drama, though. Championship frontrunner Kyle Larson was caught in an eight-car accident just seven laps in, an unfortunate incident that significantly hampered his day and saw him finish 36th.
Daniel Suárez's Emotional Hometown Win in the Xfinity Series
While van Gisbergen took the Cup Series glory, the weekend belonged to Daniel Suárez in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The Mexican native, driving the No. 9 for JR Motorsports, delivered a fairy-tale ending in Saturday's "The Chilango 150." What made it even more incredible? Suárez started last on the grid in a backup car after a crash in qualifying!
Suárez's charge through the field was nothing short of heroic. He battled his way from the back, ultimately engaging in a thrilling door-to-door duel with rookie Taylor Gray in the closing laps. The crowd erupted as Suárez secured the victory, his fourth career Xfinity win and a massively emotional one in front of his home fans. The grandstands chanted his name, a testament to the immense pride and support for their local hero.
This historic weekend showcased the global appeal of NASCAR and the passion of the Mexican fanbase. While van Gisbergen made a dominant statement in the Cup Series, Daniel Suárez's Xfinity win provided a truly heartwarming and unforgettable moment for everyone involved. The success of the event certainly exceeded expectations, proving that racing truly is a universal language
