Sheldon Creed Wins the O'Reilly Series Food City 300 at Bristol in Overtime
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing race recap, where we break down what actually decided the race, not just who got the trophy.
The Short Version
Sheldon Creed won the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday night. This was the second-tier series race, not the Cup race. Creed led only three laps all night, and they were the last three. Crew chief Jonathan Toney called him down pit road for fresh tires on lap 280, and Creed used that grip to clear William Sawalich on an overtime restart and win by 0.253 seconds. It was Creed's third win of 2026 and his second in three Chase races, and it moved him to the top of the postseason standings.
How Creed Stole It on Fresh Tires
Bristol is a half-mile concrete bullring. Tires fall off fast, and track position is usually king. That combination normally punishes anybody who gives up spots to pit. On Friday night it did the opposite.
When the caution flew just past lap 274, Toney pulled the No. 00 Ollie's Chevrolet in on lap 280 for tires while others weighed staying out. The call cost Creed spots in the short term. Then the yellow came back out again inside the final five laps and set up an overtime restart on lap 304 with the field bunched up and Sawalich out front on older rubber. Creed cleared him into turn one and never gave the lead back.
Creed kept the credit where it belonged after the race. "Just a great call by my crew chief and engineer to put tires on," he said, adding that "with a lot newer tires, it was just easier for me to get going." The Haas Factory Team posted the finish as it happened.

Carson Kvapil Dominated and Walked Away With Nothing
The fastest car on the property never saw the checkered flag on the lead lap. Carson Kvapil led a race-high 156 laps in the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, won stage two, and looked like the class of the field for most of the night.
Then it fell apart. With roughly 80 laps to go in the final stage, Kvapil told his crew he had a loose wheel and had lost his brakes. Smoke started pouring off the back of the car, and a brake line failure is the suspected cause. NASCAR ruled the car unsafe and black-flagged him off the track. Kvapil finished 24th, four laps down, on a night he had controlled.
He still holds third in the Chase standings, 37 points back, so the damage is survivable. It is the kind of night that eats at a team anyway. You do everything right for 250 laps and a single part decides your race.
The Lap 286 Restart That Blew Up Two Title Runs
With Kvapil gone, the race belonged to the two drivers at the top of the standings. It lasted about one corner.
On the restart at lap 286, defending series champion Jesse Love got into Justin Allgaier and ran the No. 7 into the outside wall. Both cars were done as winning threats right there. Allgaier salvaged fourth. Love limped home 17th after leading 85 laps.
Allgaier was blunt about it. "I felt like we raced clean all night, and it was like, he didn't even try to make the corner," he said. Love did not hide from it either. "I made a terrible decision that took ourselves out of contention to win," he said, and added that he "got caught in the moment racing him" and "made an enemy that I didn't need to make."
That one restart cost Love more than a trophy. He fell to fourth in the Chase, 41 points behind Creed, and he did it to himself against the guy running second.
Stats and Fun Facts
The race went 305 laps instead of the scheduled 300 because of the overtime finish. Five cautions covered 47 laps, and the lead changed eight times among five drivers. Taylor Gray turned the fastest lap of the night at 15.851 seconds, or 121.052 mph. Total race time was one hour, 53 minutes and seven seconds at an average speed of 86.229 mph.
Who Is Hot and Who Is Not
Hot: Sheldon Creed. Two wins in three Chase races and the points lead. He has not needed the fastest car to win either of them, which is the scarier version of a title contender.
Hot: Brent Crews. The 19-year-old in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota ran third and now has a top-three finish in each of his two Bristol starts. That is not a fluke at this place.
Hot: William Sawalich. Second in the No. 18 after leading 13 laps, and he lost it only to a car on much better tires. Nothing about that run was a mistake.
Not: Jesse Love. The defending champion made the one decision that took him out of the race and cost him a spot in the standings.
Not: Carson Kvapil. A race-high 156 laps led turned into a 24th-place finish because of a failure nobody in the cockpit could fix.
What It Means for the Chase
Three of the nine Chase races are done. Creed sits on 2,235 points, 11 clear of Allgaier. Kvapil is 37 back, Love is 41 back, and Sam Mayer is fifth at 78 behind. Nobody in the top five has separated far enough to relax.

The Bottom Line
Bristol did not reward the fastest car on Friday night. It rewarded the team that was willing to give up track position for grip and trust that a caution would come. Creed led three laps and won the race. That is Bristol.
