IndyCar Standings 2026: Palou's 83-Point Lead by the Numbers
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Track Preview, where we hand you the data before the green flag. There is no race this weekend, so this week we run the numbers on the 2026 championship instead.
The Short Version
The NTT IndyCar Series is on a break until the Grand Prix of Portland on August 9, which makes this the right week to look at where the 2026 championship actually sits. Twelve of eighteen rounds are done. Alex Palou leads by 83 points with five wins, and the driver sitting second behind him has never won an IndyCar race in his life. Six races remain, 324 points are still on the table, and the math is tighter than the headline makes it sound.
The Number That Matters

Where the 2026 IndyCar Standings Sit
Palou left Nashville on July 20 with 457 points after his fifth win of the season. He led 97 of the 225 laps that day, cycled to the front on a well-timed caution just past halfway, and never gave the lead back. It was the third oval win of his career and it pushed his advantage out to 83 points.
The shape of the top 10 tells you a lot. Team Penske has three cars inside the top eight. Arrow McLaren has both of its drivers in the top five. Chip Ganassi Racing has the championship leader and nobody else above 11th. Twelve races have produced six different winners, which is a healthy season by any measure, and yet one driver has won more of them than the other five combined.
The Man in Second Has Never Won a Race
This is the strangest line in the 2026 IndyCar standings. David Malukas moved into second at Nashville with a third-place finish, and he has never stood on the top step in the NTT IndyCar Series. Not once in 73 career starts. He has eight career podiums, one career pole, and zero wins.
Five of those eight podiums have come this season, his first with Team Penske in the No. 12 Chevrolet. He finished second in the Indianapolis 500 for the second year running. He was second at Road America. At Nashville he crashed in Saturday practice, went to the hospital with a knee injury, started from the back of the field on Monday, led 59 laps, and finished third. Whatever the record book says about his win column, he is having the best season of his career.
Six Races, 324 Points: The Math
Here is how IndyCar scoring works in 2026. A win pays 50 points, second pays 40, third pays 35, and it scales down to 5 points for 25th. Bonus points go to the pole winner (1), any driver who leads a lap (1), and the driver who leads the most laps (2). That caps a perfect weekend at 54 points. There are no double-points races on the 2026 calendar, so the finale at Laguna Seca counts exactly the same as Portland.
Six races at 54 points apiece leaves 324 on the table. Palou has averaged 38.1 points per round across the first twelve, which is the pace of a driver finishing around second every week. To erase 83 points over six races, a challenger needs to outscore him by 13.9 per race. That is not a rounding error. Winning while Palou finishes third only nets you 15. Do that once and you have made up one race worth of ground. You would need to do it nearly every week.
The Chasers and What Each One Needs
Kyle Kirkwood is the closest thing to a live threat on paper, 87 back and only four behind Malukas. He took his fourth career pole at Nashville and has five straight top-10 finishes. Christian Lundgaard has two wins, more than anyone except Palou, but his season swings hard between wins and 16th-place afternoons. Pato O'Ward finally broke through at Mid-Ohio in July, holding off Lundgaard by less than a second for his first win of the year, and sits fifth.

The run-in helps whoever is willing to gamble. Two road courses, two street courses, and an oval doubleheader at Milwaukee on August 29 and 30 give the field five weeks and six chances. Street races produce cautions, and cautions produce the kind of chaos that a points leader cannot control. That is the only real path anyone has.
What Palou Is Actually Chasing
Palou already has four IndyCar titles, won in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025. A fifth would move him past the group he currently shares with Mario Andretti, Sebastien Bourdais, and Dario Franchitti, and put him alone in third all time behind A.J. Foyt with seven and Scott Dixon with six. He is 28 years old.
It would also be a fourth straight championship. Bourdais is the only driver in modern American open-wheel racing to pull that off, and he did it in Champ Car from 2004 through 2007. Palou has 24 career wins, all of them since 2021, and he is coming off a 2025 season in which he won eight races and the Indianapolis 500.
