Detroit by the Numbers: IndyCar's 2027 Motor City Round
Part of the Happy Hour Racing IndyCar Track Preview series. The 2026 season is over, so between now and the March opener we are profiling the tracks on the 2027 calendar one at a time. This week: the downtown Detroit street circuit.
The Short Version
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix is Round 8 of the 2027 IndyCar season, set for June 6 with the full event running June 4 through 6. It is 100 laps around a 1.645-mile, nine-turn temporary street course in downtown Detroit, which works out to 164.5 miles. This is the shortest road or street circuit IndyCar visits all year, and that one fact drives almost everything else about how the race plays out.
The Track: Nine Turns and One Very Long Straight
IndyCar raced on Belle Isle from 1992 through 2022. The series moved back downtown in 2023, and the layout it built there is unusual. Nine corners is the fewest on any road or street course on the schedule, and the lap is barely a mile and a half. Cars are back around to the start line in about a minute.
The defining feature is the run down East Jefferson Avenue. That straight is roughly seven tenths of a mile, the longest straightaway on any IndyCar street circuit. It gives drivers a genuine passing zone, which street races often do not have, and it is where push to pass earns its keep.
Detroit also carries a tighter push to pass allotment than most road courses. Drivers get 150 seconds for the race with a 15-second cap per press. At Long Beach, Barber, the Indianapolis road course, Road America and Mid-Ohio, they get 200 seconds and can hold it for 20. Fifty fewer seconds on a track with one real passing zone means nobody can afford to waste a press.
What the Lap Times Tell You
The qualifying record at the downtown circuit belongs to Colton Herta, who ran a 1:00.2304 at 98.322 mph on June 1, 2024, set in a knockout segment rather than the final pole run. The race lap record is Kyle Kirkwood's 1:01.9410 from 2023, the first year on the new layout.
Look at how close those two numbers are. A gap of less than two seconds between the fastest qualifying lap ever run here and the fastest race lap ever run here is small for a street circuit. On a short lap with heavy traffic, that compression means a driver who qualifies badly cannot simply drive through the field on pace. Track position matters more here than at almost any other stop on the calendar.
Who Wins in Detroit
Four runnings of the downtown race have produced three different winners. Alex Palou took the first one in 2023 from pole, Scott Dixon won in 2024, Kyle Kirkwood won in 2025, and Palou won again in 2026. Palou's 2026 weekend was the most complete of the four: pole, fastest lap, 71 laps led, and the win.
Across the whole Detroit history, including the Belle Isle years, Scott Dixon has the most wins with four, coming in 2012, 2018, 2019 and 2024. Will Power and Helio Castroneves each have three. Graham Rahal is the only driver to sweep a Detroit doubleheader, winning both races in 2017.
The Caution Math That Decides This Race
Here is the number that separates Detroit from the rest of the schedule. The 2024 race had eight cautions covering 47 laps. Nearly half the race ran under yellow. The 2023 race had six cautions. Concrete walls sit close on a short lap, so a small mistake becomes a full-course yellow instead of a trip through a runoff area.
That changes strategy completely. Fuel windows get scrambled, pit crews have to be ready early, and a team that gambles on an off-sequence stop can get rewarded by a yellow that was always statistically likely to come. When you watch in June, pay attention to who pits just before a caution falls. In Detroit that is usually the difference between a podium and twelfth.
Three Drivers the Data Likes for 2027
Alex Palou is the obvious starting point. He won two of the four downtown races, and he closed 2026 with his fifth title in six years, finishing on 631 points, 86 clear of runner-up Kyle Kirkwood.
Kirkwood is the second name. He holds the race lap record here, he won in 2025, and he finished second in Detroit in 2026. Three strong Detroit results in a row on a track where track position rules is a real pattern, not a coincidence.
The third is Scott Dixon. Four Detroit wins is the most by anyone, and his 2024 victory came in that chaotic eight-caution race, which is exactly the kind of afternoon his strategy calls tend to win.

The Bottom Line
Detroit is the shortest, tightest, most caution-prone road or street race IndyCar runs. Qualify well, save your push to pass for Jefferson Avenue, and be on the right side of one yellow flag. Everything else is noise.
