Carson Kvapil Wins NASCAR O'Reilly Race at Martinsville, Allgaier Takes the Points Lead

Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing race recap, where we break down what actually decided Saturday's race and what it means for the title fight. This one is the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Martinsville, not the Cup race.

The Short Version

Carson Kvapil won the NASCAR O'Reilly Series race at Martinsville on Saturday, October 31, taking the National Debt Relief 250 from the pole and beating JR Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier by 0.434 seconds. Kvapil led a race-high 121 of 250 laps, including the final 68. Allgaier's second place, combined with a brutal night for Jesse Love, handed Allgaier the points lead with one race left. Five drivers go to Homestead-Miami Speedway separated by 42 points.

How Kvapil Won the NASCAR O'Reilly Race at Martinsville

Kvapil put the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet on the pole at 95.371 mph and led the first 53 laps. Then Martinsville did what Martinsville does. Cautions stacked up, pit strategy split the field, and Kvapil got shuffled back while Allgaier, Sam Mayer, Corey Day and Anthony Alfredo all took turns out front.

The race turned on Lap 183. After a caution for a crash involving the No. 32, 19, 00 and 99, Kvapil came to the restart on fresher tires than the leaders. He used the outside lane to clear Day for the lead and never gave it back. Allgaier was the fastest car on track over the final run and closed in, but a half-mile paper clip is a hard place to pass a car that does not make mistakes.

"I knew when we unloaded for practice that we had a really fast No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet," Kvapil said.

It was his third win of 2026 after Indianapolis and Iowa, and the third of his 74-race O'Reilly Series career. Crew chief Rodney Childers now has his driver in the title hunt instead of watching from the outside.

Jesse Love's Night Falls Apart

Love came to Martinsville leading the standings by 19 points. He left it 22 points behind. A tire rub in Stage 2 cost him track position and any shot at stage points, and a broken water line made things worse. Then, with 31 laps to go, the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet lost its brakes going into Turn 1 and hit the outside wall. That brought out the 12th and final caution. Love finished 30th, nine laps down, and scored 13 points.

"Nothing really to process," Love said afterward. The defending series champion is not out of it, but he no longer controls his own fate.

Twelve Cautions and a Red Flag

This was a short-track brawl from early on. There were 12 cautions for 90 of the 250 laps, which is why the average speed was just 57.084 mph and the race took two hours and 18 minutes.

The first big one came on a Lap 38 restart. A pileup in the turns collected the No. 02, 8, 17, 19 and 45, and Corey Day was right in the middle of it. Day kept the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet going and drove back to third, which might be the most important recovery of the night for his title chances.

Allgaier won Stage 1. Anthony Alfredo stayed out and won Stage 2 in the No. 96 Viking Motorsports Chevrolet, then faded to 17th. On Lap 164 a crash on the backstretch involving the No. 91, 38 and 0 brought out a red flag for 11 minutes and 50 seconds. Sheldon Creed got caught up in the Lap 176 wreck and still rallied to sixth, which kept him mathematically alive.

The Chase Picture Heading to Homestead

Under this year's Chase format there is no elimination round and no winner-take-all final four. The driver with the most points after the last race is the champion. That makes next Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway a straight points fight between Allgaier at 2,436, Love 22 back, Day 23 back, Kvapil 31 back and Creed 42 back. Sam Mayer finished fifth but is 97 out and done.

Allgaier has six wins this year and won at Homestead in March 2025. Kvapil has the momentum. Day has four wins and just survived a night that could have ended his run. Track the full grid on the NASCAR O'Reilly Series schedule and standings page, and catch up on how we got here in our Talladega O'Reilly recap.

Who Is Hot, Who Is Not

Hot: Carson Kvapil. Pole, 121 laps led, a win, and a deficit to the top cut from 59 points to 31.

Hot: Lee Pulliam. He started 37th in the No. 87 Peterson Racing Group Chevrolet and finished 14th.

Not: Jesse Love. A tire rub, a water line and a brake failure in one night turned a 19-point lead into a 22-point hole.

Not: Austin Hill. A flat tire on Lap 22 and a 31st-place finish, nine laps down, for the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

The Bottom Line

Martinsville punished everybody at some point on Saturday night. Kvapil was the driver who recovered best, and Allgaier was the driver who got the most out of a second-place car. JR Motorsports goes to Homestead with two of the five title contenders, and the man who started the night in first now has to chase.

Your turn: Allgaier, Love, Day, Kvapil or Creed. Who wins the O'Reilly Series title at Homestead? Tell us your pick.
