The Short Version
The Damaged Vehicle Policy is NASCAR's rule for what happens after you wreck. Crew members get seven minutes on pit road to make the car raceable, eight at Atlanta. If the work runs past that, the car goes to the garage. Until 2025 the garage meant your day was over. Now it does not. Teams can fix the car in the garage with no clock at all and come back out, and in 2026 NASCAR added one catch to stop drivers from abusing it.
What the DVP Actually Is
Before 2017, a wrecked car could limp to the garage, sit there for 40 laps while the crew beat the fenders off it, and come back out 30 laps down just to collect points. Fans hated watching it. NASCAR hated the safety risk of half-repaired cars back on track.
So NASCAR wrote the Damaged Vehicle Policy. It put a clock on repairs and it set a standard the car has to meet before it goes back out. The car has to be able to hold minimum speed. It cannot be leaking fluid. It has to have all four tires and the bodywork has to be secured.
One more piece that trips people up. Teams can only use fasteners and tape. Original body parts can come off or get reattached where they were. Nobody is bolting on a new fender from the hauler.
The Seven-Minute Clock
Seven minutes. Eight at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
That is how long a crew gets to work on a damaged car in its pit box. The clock runs whether the car is sitting still or the crew is swarming it.
Here is the part that costs teams races. If the car leaves the pit box to rejoin and the clock expires before it reaches pit exit, that is a penalty. Crew chiefs have to decide with seconds left whether to send it or give up and take the garage. Get that call wrong and a repairable car is suddenly a bad finish.
If a car cannot be driven to pit road at all, because of crash damage or flat tires, it gets towed. It does not get a pit road attempt. It goes straight to the garage.
The Garage Rule That Changed Everything
This is the big one, and it is recent enough that a lot of fans still have the old rule in their head.
Through the 2024 season, a damaged car that was driven or towed to the garage was out of the race. Done. That was the whole point of the policy.
In January 2025, NASCAR changed it. Cars are now allowed to continue in the race after repairs in the garage, and there is no clock on the work once the car is back there. Seven minutes on pit road, unlimited time in the garage.
The Larson Loophole and the 2026 Fix
Give teams unlimited garage time and somebody is going to find the angle. Kyle Larson found it fast.
NASCAR hands out a bonus point for the fastest lap of the race. In 2025, Larson took the No. 5 to the garage, had the crew fix it, went back out on a clear track with nobody to race, and ripped off the fastest lap. He did it at Mexico City while running 42 laps down. He did it again at Watkins Glen, 15 laps behind the winner.
It was legal. It was also not really racing.
NASCAR closed it in January 2026. A driver whose car is repaired in the garage is no longer eligible for the fastest-lap point.
"It did not feel exactly right or fair that teams working on the car in the garage for a while specifically just to lay down that fastest lap," NASCAR managing director of communications Mike Forde said on the Hauler Talk podcast. "It did not feel super in the spirit of competition, so we decided to change it."
There are two ways you still keep the point. If you set the fastest lap before the damage, it stands. And if your repairs happen on pit road instead of the garage, you stay eligible.
Xfinity and Trucks Caught Up in May 2026
The 2025 garage change only applied to Cup. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and the Craftsman Truck Series kept the old rule, where a tow to the garage ended your race.
That changed at Charlotte in May 2026. Both series now get the same treatment as Cup.
"Those drivers will now be towed back, dropped in their garage stall, and they will have the opportunity to make repairs based on what is allowed," NASCAR senior director of racing communications Amanda Ellis said. "They still have a chance to get back out there, especially with points being how they are now."
All three national series finally run the same policy.
What to Watch For
When a car hits the wall, watch whether it can drive itself to pit road. That one detail decides everything. Drive down and you get seven minutes and a real shot. Get hooked to the wrecker and you are going to the garage, and you are losing a lot of laps even though you can come back.
Then watch the crew chief. Around the five-minute mark you will see him either commit everybody to the car or start waving them off. That is him doing the math on whether the clock beats pit exit.
