Ty Gibbs Wins the Iowa Corn 350: Two Tires Beat Christopher Bell at Iowa Speedway
Welcome to the Happy Hour Racing Monday Race Recap - what happened, why it happened, and what it means for the rest of the season. Written for fans, not for engineers.
The Short Version
Ty Gibbs won the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa Speedway on Sunday, August 9, holding off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell by 0.253 seconds. Gibbs never led a lap until lap 331 of 350. The reason he led any at all was a two-tire call from crew chief Tyler Allen on lap 290 that got the No. 54 out ahead of the cars that took four. It is the second Cup win of Gibbs' career and his second of the 2026 season, after Bristol in April.
Key Moments and Turning Points
The race turned three times, and none of the three involved the eventual winner until the very end.
Lap 4. Tyler Reddick was racing Erik Jones for eighth when the No. 45 got loose over the bumps entering Turn 1. Reddick washed up the track, hit the outside wall nose-first, and collected Jones on the way. Both cars were done. Reddick was credited with 36th, Jones with 35th. That is three laps of racing for one of the fastest cars in the field and a season-wrecking day for a driver who was fighting for a Chase spot.

Stage 1. Ryan Blaney started on the pole and led all 70 laps of the opening stage. Nobody got close. The No. 12 looked like the class of the field for the first hour.
Lap 148. John Hunter Nemechek got into Kyle Larson, the field went four-wide, and both Larson and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman came out of it with damaged cars. Larson finished 33rd. Bowman finished 34th and parked with 194 laps complete. Two Hendrick cars gone in one shot.
Christopher Bell took Stage 2 and led 108 laps in the middle third of the race. Then the run to the finish went green from lap 218 all the way to the checkered flag. That is 133 straight green-flag laps, and it put the race entirely in the hands of the pit boxes.
Pit Strategy: The Call That Won It
Here is how it actually played out. With the race staying green, every team had to make a green-flag stop inside the last 70 laps. Ross Chastain cycled to the lead and held it from lap 291 to lap 330. Behind him, Gibbs and Bell were sorting out the race between themselves on pit road.
Bell took four tires. Tyler Allen called for two on the No. 54 on lap 290. Gibbs came out ahead of him and never gave the spot back. When Chastain finally made his stop, Gibbs inherited the lead on lap 331 and drove the last 20 laps with Bell in his mirror.
Allen said the team had the data to back the call up. "We knew after practice the left sides weren't wearing much and they tended to refire OK." That is the whole gamble in one sentence. If the left-side tires had fallen off, Bell drives past him in five laps. They did not, so Gibbs had clean air and Bell had to pass him on the track. He could not.
Worth remembering: Gibbs put himself in that spot after a bad stop at the first stage break on lap 74 cost him about 25 positions. He spent the middle of the race climbing back through traffic, which is not the sort of day that usually ends in Victory Lane.

Stats and Fun Facts
Blaney led a race-high 129 laps and finished third. Bell led 108 and finished second. Gibbs led 20 and won. That is Iowa in a nutshell.
A few more that stood out. Bell's runner-up run was his seventh second-place finish of 2026, and he still has not won a race this year. Bell also turned the fastest lap of the day at 24.158 seconds. Bubba Wallace led 35 laps, got hit with a speeding penalty and sent to the rear, and still salvaged 12th. Denny Hamlin finished fifth while fighting brake problems the whole way, which is how a points leader stays a points leader.
Who Is Hot and Who Is Not
Hot: Ty Gibbs. Two wins, and he is now second in the standings at 820 points, 103 behind Hamlin. A year ago this was the guy fans argued about. Now he is beating his own teammates on strategy and holding them off on merit.
Hot: Josh Berry. Fourth in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford, quietly one of the better runs of his season on a track that punishes anybody who overdrives it.
Hot: Ross Chastain. Seventh, plus stage points, and he led 40 laps. He is still 18th in points, but he is trending the right direction with three races left before the Chase.
Not: Tyler Reddick. Five wins on the year and he is somehow sliding. Iowa was his third DNF of 2026 and his third finish of 30th or worse in five races. He dropped to fourth, 120 out.
Not: Hendrick Motorsports. Larson 33rd, Bowman 34th, both out of one incident on lap 148. William Byron salvaged ninth. That is not the day a four-car team wants heading into the last stretch of the regular season.
Not: Christopher Bell. Seven second-place finishes and zero wins is a genuinely strange season. He said it himself: "This is what you call a bad second-place finish for sure."

Fan Pick of the Week: How It Played Out
Our Iowa matchup was fan favorite Tyler Reddick against underdog Erik Jones. Fans were split 75 percent Reddick to 25 percent Jones, and then lap 4 threw the whole thing out. Reddick got loose in Turn 1 and took both cars out of the race with him. Jones was credited with 35th, Reddick with 36th, so the underdog technically finished higher and the underdog side took it. Fans who picked Reddick got it wrong, but nobody enjoyed the way it happened.

What It Means Going Forward
Denny Hamlin still leads with 923 points. Gibbs is second at 820, Blaney third at 813, Reddick fourth at 803. Three races remain before the Chase, and the bubble is where the real fight is. Ty Gibbs did not have the fastest car at Iowa. He had the best pit box. Two tires on lap 290 and 20 clean laps out front were worth more than the 237 laps Blaney and Bell led between them.
