Southern 500 Pick 2026: Chase Briscoe at Darlington, By the Numbers

The Short Version

The Southern 500 pick for 2026 comes with a brand new set of math. NASCAR's Chase opens Sunday, September 6 at Darlington Raceway with 367 laps and 501 miles on USA Network, and for the first time in a decade the postseason has no elimination rounds. All 16 drivers race 10 straight weeks, most points wins the title, and the reset squeezed a 405-point regular-season gap down to just 100. That means Sunday night matters more than any Chase opener in years. Our pick is Chase Briscoe, and the numbers below explain why.

The Chase Reset Just Erased 305 Points

Start with the number that changes everything. When the regular season ended at Daytona, Denny Hamlin had 1,027 points and Ryan Preece, the 16th and final qualifier, had 622. That is a 405-point canyon.

Then the reset hit. Hamlin, as regular-season leader, starts the Chase at 2,100. Ryan Blaney gets 2,075, Tyler Reddick 2,065, and from there the field steps down in five-point increments to Preece at 2,000. Fourteen weeks of separation became 100 points.

Now stack that against what a single Sunday is worth. NASCAR raised the win to 55 points this year, up from 40. Second pays 35, third pays 34, and it drops by one all the way to a single point for last. Do that subtraction and one race can swing a driver 54 points before stage points even get added. The entire Chase field is one bad night away from each other.

Darlington by the Numbers

Darlington Raceway is 1.366 miles of egg-shaped concrete and asphalt with 25 degrees of banking in turns one and two and 23 degrees in turns three and four. The two ends do not match, which is why nobody ever gets the car right at both. The nickname is honest: the track too tough to tame.

One thing is genuinely new. For 2026, Darlington moved to NASCAR's short-track aero package, which means a three-inch rear spoiler, fewer diffuser strakes, and 750 horsepower. Less grip, more power. That kit ran here for the first time in March, so there is exactly one race of data on how these cars behave at Darlington under the current rules.

Here is what that March race told us. Tyler Reddick won the Goodyear 400 from the pole with a lap of 29.072 seconds, good for 169.152 mph. Brad Keselowski led the most laps with 144 and won both opening stages before finishing second. There were 16 lead changes among eight drivers and only four cautions for 26 laps. Track position ruled and clean air was gold.

The catch is that Sunday is not that race. The Southern 500 is 367 laps instead of 293, it starts in daylight and ends under lights, and the track cools off across the night. Last year's edition took 7 cautions for 37 laps and produced 24 lead changes among 10 drivers. Long green runs and heavy tire fall-off decide this one, not a single qualifying lap.

The Four Drivers the Data Likes

Denny Hamlin owns Darlington on paper. Five wins, 28 starts, 14 top fives, 20 top tens, and an 8.0 average finish, the best of anyone active. He also has four runner-up finishes here, more than any other active driver, and Southern 500 wins in 2010, 2017 and 2021. He is the No. 1 seed and the betting favorite.

Kyle Larson has led 1,070 laps at Darlington, more than anybody. He won the 2023 Southern 500, then led 263 laps here in 2024 and did not win it, which is the most Darlington thing that can happen to a driver.

Tyler Reddick is the most recent Cup winner at the track and leads the series with five wins in 2026, though none since the spring. He has one finish outside the top 10 in his last six Darlington starts and ran second in last year's Southern 500.

Chase Briscoe has simply won this race twice in a row.

Our Southern 500 Pick: Chase Briscoe

Three numbers make this pick.

309. That is how many of the 367 laps Briscoe led while winning last year's Southern 500. Leading 84 percent of a race at a track that punishes one bad entry is not luck.

Two. He has won this race two years running, and he did it with two different teams and two different manufacturers. The 2024 win came in the No. 14 Ford at Stewart-Haas Racing, the last victory that team ever scored. The 2025 win came in the No. 19 Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing. Change everything around the driver and the result stayed the same. That points at the guy in the seat.

45. That is how far back of Hamlin he sits as the No. 5 seed, at 2,055 points. In a 10-race Chase with no cutlines, a win plus stage points on night one is the cleanest way to put pressure on the leader before the schedule turns to the mile-and-a-halves.

The honest counterargument: Briscoe finished 12th in the spring race under this same aero package, and his 2026 season took until Chicagoland in July to produce a win. Hamlin's 8.0 average finish is the single best predictive number at this track, so if you want the safe play, it is Hamlin. We are taking the driver who has beaten this specific race twice.

Nobody has won three Southern 500s in a row since Jeff Gordon reeled off four straight from 1995 through 1998. That is the size of what Briscoe is chasing.

The Bottom Line

The reset gave all 16 drivers a live shot, and Darlington immediately takes it away from somebody. Track position and tire management win the Southern 500, and the man who has managed both better than anyone for two straight Septembers is Chase Briscoe.
