The Indy 500 by the Numbers: Inside the 111th Running

Part of the Happy Hour Racing Track Preview series. The IndyCar season is over, so this is a between-races feature. Same job as always: the numbers, the records, and the facts that make a track race the way it does.

The Short Version

The Indianapolis 500 is 200 laps around a 2.5-mile rectangle with almost no banking, and it has been run that way since 1911. The 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge is set for Sunday, May 30, 2027, on FOX. It will also be the last 500 for the Dallara DW12, the chassis IndyCar has raced since 2012. Here is the track, the records, and the winners list, all in one place.

The track: 2.5 miles, four corners, almost no banking

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a rectangular oval with four geometrically identical turns, each a quarter-mile long. Two of the sides are 0.625-mile straights. The other two are linked by 0.125-mile short chutes. The corners are banked at 9 degrees and 12 minutes, which sounds like nothing next to a modern intermediate oval, because it is nothing. Daytona's corners are banked at 31 degrees. Talladega's are at 33.

That is the whole puzzle of Indianapolis. The speeds are the highest in American motorsport, but the banking does almost none of the work holding the car down. The car has to do it with aerodynamic grip that the teams spend all month trimming away in search of straight-line speed. Trim too much and the car will not hold the bottom lane in traffic. Trim too little and you qualify 25th.

Indianapolis 500 by the numbers: track specs, records and 2027 race details

Two numbers on that card deserve a second look. Arie Luyendyk's one-lap record of 237.498 mph and his four-lap record of 236.986 mph were both set in 1996. By race day 2027 they will be 31 years old. Alex Palou's 2026 pole run of 232.248 mph was quick by modern standards and still more than four miles an hour short.

Two more things that trip up fans who follow IndyCar's road courses: there is no push to pass at Indianapolis, because push to pass is a road and street course tool only. The hybrid energy recovery system does run here, and it is worth roughly 60 horsepower on demand, but drivers have to harvest that energy on a lap where they are at full throttle almost the whole way around. How teams regenerate and deploy it has become one of the quiet strategy battles of the month.

What the winners list tells you

The last decade of Indianapolis 500 results is not a story about one team running away with it. Eight different drivers have won the last ten runnings, and the average speeds swing by more than 35 miles an hour depending on how many cautions fall.

Four drivers share the all-time record with four wins each: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Rick Mears and Helio Castroneves. Mears also holds the record for most poles with six. Castroneves owns the fastest 500 ever run, a 190.690 mph average in 2021 that went almost entirely green.

The most recent running is the one that will be replayed for decades. Felix Rosenqvist beat David Malukas by 0.0233 seconds in 2026, the closest finish in the history of the race, and he did it on the last lap after a late caution set up a one-lap sprint. That race also produced 70 lead changes, a record, breaking the 68 set in 2013. Rosenqvist goes back to Arrow McLaren for 2027, so he will defend in different colors.

Why the 111th running is a farewell

The Dallara DW12 arrived in 2012. It survived a manufacturer aero kit era, picked up the aeroscreen in 2020, and took on a hybrid powertrain in 2024. The 2027 race will be its last Indianapolis 500. A new Dallara IR-28 chassis built around a 2.4-liter V6 formula takes over for 2028.

That makes 2027 the last time the current car runs the oldest race on the calendar, and it means every record the DW12 holds at Indianapolis gets locked in that Sunday afternoon.

The month of May calendar

Indianapolis is still the only race on the schedule with its own month. Here is how May 2027 is laid out.

Date What happens
May 4 to 5 Open test, including rookie orientation
May 15 Sonsio Grand Prix on the IMS road course
May 18 Indianapolis 500 practice opens
May 22 to 23 Time Trials, 33 cars set the grid
May 28 Carb Day and the Pit Stop Challenge
May 30 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500

The Bottom Line

Thirty-three cars, 200 laps, nine degrees of banking, and a lap record nobody has touched in three decades. The 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 2027 will be the last one for the car IndyCar has raced for fifteen years, and the defending winner showed up last May and won it by less than a car length. That is a good reason to circle a date seven months out.
