Max Verstappen Wins the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix at Last
Happy Hour Racing Formula 1 Race Recap, Round 17 of the 2026 season.
The Short Version
Max Verstappen won the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix on October 11, leading all 62 laps from pole and beating Charles Leclerc by 7.335 seconds. It was the only circuit on the current calendar where Verstappen had never won, and it took him ten tries to fix that. The same weekend was his 250th Grand Prix start and the win was the 73rd of his career. Kimi Antonelli finished third and left Marina Bay with a 102 point championship lead.
Verstappen Finally Cracks Marina Bay
This was not a lucky win. Verstappen took pole for Saturday's sprint, won the sprint, took pole for the Grand Prix, and then won that too. A clean sweep of the weekend, under the lights, at the one track that had always found a way to deny him.
The only real moment of danger came at the start. Leclerc got off the line well and went for the inside, but Verstappen held the better angle through Turn 1 and kept the lead. After that it was a tire management exercise. By the time Leclerc pitted just past a third distance, Verstappen had built a cushion of close to nine seconds. He covered the stop, came back out in front, and never looked like losing it.
Red Bull also picked up the fastest pit stop of the race, which tells you how clean the whole operation was. Verstappen has now won back to back, after taking Round 16 in Malaysia, and he has climbed to fourth in the drivers' standings.

The Ferrari Split That Cost Lewis Hamilton
Ferrari had the second fastest car and split its drivers. Leclerc started second on softs, matching Verstappen. Hamilton started third on mediums, betting on a longer first stint and better track position later.
Hamilton pitted early, around lap 18, and took on softs. That left him exposed for a very long run to the flag. When Lance Stroll stopped on track and brought out a Virtual Safety Car near lap 39, Ferrari called Hamilton in behind Leclerc for the cheap stop. He did not make it in.
"Under the VSC, the team called me in but I missed the entry," Hamilton said afterward, adding that he was sorry for the team and the points they lost. Leclerc took fresh rubber and drove straight past him. Antonelli and Lando Norris followed. Hamilton hung on for sixth on tires that were finished.
Leclerc did get something out of it. His second stop set up the fastest lap of the race, a 1:35.202, his third fastest lap of the season.
Mercedes Took the Points Anyway
Antonelli had an unremarkable weekend by his own standards and still walked away with a podium, his 14th of the season. He passed Hamilton late for third, and he did it while his engineer was repeatedly warning him about track limits. The stewards looked at a possible five second penalty and let it go. Not everyone in the paddock agreed with that call.

George Russell had the harder day. A power unit change dropped him to 19th on the grid, and he had already put his car into the pit wall during a wet sprint on Saturday. Ninth on Sunday, at a track where passing is genuinely difficult, was close to the maximum available.
The other recovery drive belonged to Isack Hadjar. He started 22nd and last, and finished tenth after a late pass on Pierre Gasly for the final point. Nico Hulkenberg also deserves a mention. Eighth place matched Audi's best result of the season so far.
By the Numbers
Three cars did not see the flag. Gabriel Bortoleto was out inside the first ten laps with a gearbox problem, Franco Colapinto stopped with a transmission failure around a third distance, and Stroll's clutch gave up just before the 40 lap mark. Alex Albon also parked his Williams in the closing laps.
Who Is Hot and Who Is Not
Hot: Verstappen, obviously. Two wins in two weekends after going most of the season without one. Leclerc has quietly been Ferrari's best driver for a month. Hadjar keeps turning bad grid slots into points, and he sits eighth in the championship in his first season at the senior Red Bull team.
Not: Hamilton, who took responsibility for the mistake but still handed away real points in a championship he is third in. Oscar Piastri took fifth on Sunday but sits seventh in the standings and still has not won a race in 2026. McLaren left Singapore having scored fourth and fifth after their two drivers collided with each other on the last lap of the sprint.
What It Means for the Title
Antonelli leads with 340 points. Russell is second on 238, Hamilton third on 229, Verstappen fourth on 221. That is a 102 point gap with six races and 150 points still available, so Antonelli does not have it locked up, but it would take something close to a collapse now. Mercedes leads Ferrari by 134 in the constructors' championship.
Next up is the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on October 25. You can see the rest of the calendar and the updated table on the Formula 1 schedule and standings page.
The Bottom Line
Verstappen spent ten years losing at Singapore and then won every session that mattered in one weekend. Ferrari had the pace for a real fight and split it in half. And the driver who quietly finished third is still the one running away with the championship.

Your turn. Antonelli got a warning instead of a five second penalty for track limits, and that warning is the difference between a podium and fourth place. Did the stewards get it right, or did Hamilton get robbed of a place he had already lost on strategy anyway? Tell us below.
