Italian Grand Prix Results: Antonelli Wins From 19th at Monza

The Short Version
Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday after starting 19th on the grid. He qualified seventh, then took a 30-place penalty for using too many engine parts, so he lined up near the back for his home race. He passed everybody anyway, beat Mercedes teammate George Russell by 3.857 seconds, and became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since 1966. That is 60 years. The Monza grandstands lost their minds.

Why Antonelli Started 19th
This one is simple, and it had nothing to do with his driving. Every driver gets a set number of engine parts for the season. Go over the limit and you get sent backward on the grid. Mercedes put fresh power unit parts in Antonelli's car at Monza, which is a fast, engine-hungry track, and the penalty came to 30 places.
You cannot actually drop 30 spots in a 22-car field, so he simply went to the back of the queue. Other penalized drivers shuffled around him, and he ended up 19th. Oscar Piastri also lost three places for blocking Liam Lawson in qualifying, and Lawson took an even bigger engine penalty and started from the very back.
So the man who was quick enough to qualify seventh started 19th, at the one race on the calendar where every fan in the place was wearing his name.
The Race: A Red Flag, A Comeback, Then Another Comeback
Gasly led the first lap from pole before Russell went by. Then the race broke. Charles Leclerc lost his Ferrari on the opening lap at the Curva Alboreto, the corner most fans still call Parabolica, and hit the barrier hard. He was out on the spot, at Ferrari's home race, in front of the Tifosi. The race was red-flagged for about half an hour while the barrier was rebuilt.
Antonelli had already turned 19th into 12th in those opening laps. After the restart he went on a tear. He cleared the Racing Bulls cars, then Piastri, then Lando Norris, then Lewis Hamilton, then Max Verstappen. On lap 18 he swept past Russell into the first chicane and led his home Grand Prix.
Then he had to do it a second time. Around lap 28 Lance Stroll stopped with a hydraulics problem and brought out the virtual safety car. Antonelli pitted for fresh medium tires. Russell stayed out on older rubber and inherited the lead, which left Antonelli roughly 15 seconds behind with about 20 laps to run.
He ate all of it. With five laps left he was on Russell's gearbox. His first lunge, on lap 49, went wrong and he ran wide through the gravel at the chicane. Three laps from the end he got it right, working the move between Lesmo 2 and the Ascari chicane, and Russell had no answer. Antonelli then set the fastest lap of the race on the final lap, a 1:23.504, because apparently the point needed underlining.
Monza By The Numbers
What It Means For The Championship
Antonelli now has 267 points and seven wins in 2026. Russell is second on 201, so the gap is 66 points. Hamilton sits third on 191 for Ferrari, Norris fourth on 171, and Leclerc's retirement leaves him fifth on 155. Verstappen is sixth on 127 and still has not won a race this season.
In the constructors' standings Mercedes have 468 points to Ferrari's 346 and McLaren's 287. Nine wins from 13 races is the kind of season that ends with trophies in a display case.
Sixty-six points with nine races left is not the title yet, but it is close to a three-win cushion. Antonelli does not need to be brilliant from here. He needs to keep finishing.

The Other Stories From Monza
Gasly finally got his pole. Nine years and 191 starts into his career, the Alpine driver put it on the front of the grid at Monza. He is the first French driver to take a pole since Jean Alesi in 1997. The race did not follow the script and he came home seventh, but nobody takes a maiden pole away from you.
Ferrari's home weekend was rough. Leclerc was gone on lap one. Hamilton ran wide into the gravel in the early scramble and recovered to sixth, which he described as a bit devastating given where the weekend started. A Ferrari home race with zero podiums stings.
Verstappen took third from fifth on the grid, which is a solid day for Red Bull in a season where solid days have been the ceiling. He is still looking for win number one in 2026.
Alpine had a genuinely good Sunday beyond the pole, with Franco Colapinto ninth for a double points finish.
The Bottom Line
A 20-year-old Italian took a 30-place engine penalty at Monza, started 19th, passed the entire field, lost the lead in the pits, chased down 15 seconds, and passed his teammate again with three laps to go to win his home Grand Prix for the first time by an Italian in 60 years. Whatever you were doing Sunday, this was better.
