Antonelli Can Clinch the 2026 F1 Title in Austin

No Grand Prix last weekend, so this is the Happy Hour Racing Formula 1 between-races feature. One look at where the 2026 title race actually stands before the cars unload at Circuit of the Americas.

The Short Version

Formula 1 is off this weekend. It comes back on Sunday, October 25 at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, and the United States Grand Prix is the first race where Kimi Antonelli can be crowned 2026 world champion. He leads by 102 points with six races and 150 points left. Three things have to happen at once for it to end in Texas, and if they do, a 20 year old breaks a record that has stood for 16 years.

Where the 2026 Title Race Stands

Seventeen of 23 rounds are done. Antonelli has 340 points. His own Mercedes teammate George Russell is second on 238. Then it is Lewis Hamilton on 229, Max Verstappen on 221, Charles Leclerc on 215 and Lando Norris on 201.

That is six drivers still mathematically alive, which sounds closer than it is. All six are alive only because 150 points is a big number. Nobody outside the Mercedes garage has been within shouting distance of Antonelli since the spring.

The season numbers tell it plainer. Antonelli has eight wins, 14 podiums and six poles in 17 starts. He has finished outside the top five exactly twice all year, at Barcelona and at Silverstone. Everything else has been a podium or close to one.

Mercedes lead the constructors 578 to Ferrari's 444, with McLaren on 339 and Red Bull on 332. That one is not finished either, but it is heading the same direction.

What Antonelli Needs in Austin

Here is the math, and it is tighter than the points gap makes it sound. After Austin there are five races left, worth 125 points. So Antonelli needs his lead over every single rival to be more than 125 when the flag drops on Sunday.

That means all three of these have to happen:

  1. Antonelli wins the United States Grand Prix.
  2. Russell finishes 10th or worse. Ninth works too, because a tie goes to Antonelli on the win count, eight to three.
  3. Hamilton finishes 5th or worse.

A win puts Antonelli on 365. That alone knocks out Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris no matter where they finish. But Russell and Hamilton start close enough that they can keep themselves alive with a decent afternoon. If Antonelli finishes second or lower, it rolls on to Mexico City on November 1 regardless.

Worth saying out loud: if it does happen in Austin, Antonelli would be 20 years and 61 days old. Sebastian Vettel has held the youngest-champion record since 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli would take more than three years off it.

Verstappen Is the Fastest Man Nobody Can Catch

The strangest part of the back half of this season is that the quickest car at the last two races has not been the Mercedes. Verstappen won in Malaysia, then won in Singapore from pole by 7.3 seconds over Leclerc on his 250th Grand Prix start. It was his first Singapore win, and his 73rd career win.

Over the last five races Verstappen has taken 101 of a possible 125 points. Antonelli has 93 in the same stretch. Red Bull found something, and they found it roughly four months too late.

Antonelli was asked about it after Singapore and did not pretend otherwise. He said it would be "very scary" if Verstappen were in the title fight this year. Verstappen has won three of the last four United States Grands Prix at Austin, including last year, so this is not a comfortable place for Mercedes to try to close a championship.

Who Is Hot and Who Is Not

Hot: Verstappen, obviously, with five straight podiums and two straight wins. Leclerc quietly scored in every one of the last five races and was second in Singapore. Hamilton has been the steadier Ferrari on points and sits third in the championship.

Not: Russell is second in the standings and going backwards. He won Baku with a dominant weekend, then retired from Malaysia after 49 laps and could only recover to ninth in Singapore from 19th on the grid. That Malaysia retirement is the single result that put Austin in play for his teammate.

Gone: Oscar Piastri. The man who lost the 2025 title by 13 points was mathematically eliminated after Malaysia. He has no wins and two podiums in 2026 after winning seven races last year. That is the most brutal one-year swing on the grid.

What Mercedes Is Actually Saying

Not much, and on purpose. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord put the Austin clinch at "something like a one-in-25 chance of that being remotely possible," and said the focus is "how can we get the car in its sweet spot and then go and score as many points as possible." Mercedes is bringing a full updated aero package to Austin, new front wing included, for both cars.

Toto Wolff was blunter about the season as a whole. He put Antonelli's odds of winning the championship at "probably almost 100 per cent," while noting that racing finds ways to surprise you.

You can see the rest of the run-in and the live points on the Formula 1 schedule and standings page. Six races left: Austin, Mexico City, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The Bottom Line

Antonelli is going to win this championship. The only open question is the postcode. Austin needs three separate results to land the right way on the same afternoon, which is why Mercedes is talking about front wings instead of trophies. Mexico City is the realistic one. But if Austin breaks right, a 20 year old in his second F1 season becomes the youngest world champion the sport has ever had, on American soil, on a Sunday afternoon in Texas.

So what do you think: does it end in Austin, or does Verstappen spoil the party again at a track he owns? Tell us in the comments.
