2026 IndyCar Season So Far: Alex Palou Leads, But the Title Fight Just Got Tight

The Short Version

Eleven of eighteen races are done, and Alex Palou still sits on top of the 2026 IndyCar standings with 404 points. His lead is 56 points over Kyle Kirkwood, which sounds comfortable until you notice how many drivers are stacked right behind. Pato O'Ward finally broke through with a win at Mid-Ohio, Felix Rosenqvist won the closest Indy 500 in history, and seven races remain to settle it all. Nashville is next.

Palou Is in Command, But This Is Not a Runaway

Palou has been the best driver in the field again. He won four of the first eleven races, taking St. Petersburg, Barber, Long Beach, and Detroit, and he has finished on the podium far more often than not. The Chip Ganassi Racing number 10 has led the championship since the opening weekend and has not let go.

Here is the part that should make the back half interesting. At this same point last season, Palou held a lead of more than 90 points. This year the cushion is 56, and the drivers chasing him are not fading. Kyle Kirkwood has been the most consistent challenger in the Andretti Global camp. Christian Lundgaard sits third on 339 points with two wins of his own, and David Malukas is fourth on 338, separated from second by a single race worth of points. Four drivers are covered by 66 points. That is a real fight, not a coronation.

Palou is chasing history on top of the trophy. He is already a four-time champion, with titles in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025. A 2026 crown would make it three in a row and five overall, which would put him in rare company for the modern era.

The Indy 500 That Rewrote the Record Book

The defining moment of the season so far did not go to Palou. It went to Felix Rosenqvist, who won the 110th Indianapolis 500 by 0.0233 seconds, the closest finish in the history of the race. Rosenqvist ran the high line off the final corner and edged David Malukas at the line, beating the old record margin of 0.043 set back in 1992. For a driver who had waited years for a defining IndyCar day, it was the win that changed how his career reads.

Who Is Hot and Who Is Not

Pato O'Ward is the driver trending up. Mid-Ohio was his first win of 2026, his tenth career IndyCar victory, and it came inside Arrow McLaren's first 1-2 finish in team history with Christian Lundgaard right behind him. For a driver who had been fast but winless all year, that result flips his momentum heading into the ovals, where his car has always been strong.

Josef Newgarden is quietly back in form too. He recovered from an Indianapolis foot injury to win at Gateway and has two victories on the season. On the other side, Will Power has had a rough first year at Andretti Global. He has led plenty of laps, but results have not followed, and he sits well down the standings for a driver of his caliber. Rookie Mick Schumacher is still learning the series near the bottom of the order, with his team publicly committed to the long game.

What Is Left

Seven races decide the 2026 title. The schedule turns to Nashville Superspeedway next, then Portland, a stop in Markham, Ontario, and a brand new street race in Washington, D.C. before a double-header at the Milwaukee Mile and the finale at Laguna Seca. Silly season is running hot underneath all of it, with several contract situations unsettled across the paddock.

The math still favors Palou. History and consistency are on his side, and 56 points is a real buffer with seven races to go. But he does not have the runaway he enjoyed last season, and any bad afternoon on an oval or a wet street course can shrink that gap in a hurry. That is exactly what makes the run to the finish worth watching.

The Bottom Line

Palou is the clear favorite, but 2026 is closer than the leaderboard makes it look. Four drivers inside 66 points, a record-setting Indy 500 already in the books, and O'Ward finally winning again all point to a back half with plenty left to decide. Nashville is the next answer.
